The Truth about Dare

I always thought director Jett Blakk's extremely clever, plot-driven movies would be a good match for Falcon, whose movies -- especially lately -- have been pretty flat, story-wise. I made some introductions and the powers that be hired him for a multi-picture deal. Jett thanked me by stabbing me to death in Dare, his first movie for them, which started out as a remake of Flashpoint but quickly took on a life of its own.

We filmed the scene at the LA County Fair last September and it was a really fun day. Despite an ambitious shooting schedule, Jett, my murderer (old-school gay porn star Lou Cass) and I found time to eat corn dogs, go on rides, and gab about horror movies. For the climax of the scene, Lou stabbed me in the Spook House and I even got to use fake blood (it was ketchup, but still). I posted a few pictures from the day on my Flickr account (warning, these pictures contain absolutely NO nudity).

The weather was crazy that day: sunny one minute and torrential downpour the next. As a result, a drop of rain was on the lens in a few of the shots so Falcon asked for a re-shoot. Second time around we shot the scene up here in San Francisco; it wasn't as fun but the final product looks great nonetheless:

Falcon ended up releasing Dare as their big release of 2007. At the GayVNs, Dare was nominated for best orgy and best screenplay and Lou got nominated for best non-sex performance. Neither won (GayVN judges seem a bit biased against Falcon the last couple of years), but I'm pretty sure it will do better at the Grabbys. Make no mistake: I have no delusions about my contribution to Dare. I have no aspirations of becoming an actor and I realize that most people will end up fast-forwarding right through it to the actual hot parts, but it was fun and I got to feel like star for a day so what more could I ask for?

Pitbull Goes East ... And We Don't Mean Harlem

Leave it to Pitbull to confuse the race relations even further. The Kentucky-fried screener for the Menace to Str8 Thugs features black and Latino studs with a decidedly eastern flavor: Chyna, Blasian Asian and Mr. Sauki. Perhaps if I were living in East Harlem, I'd have a better idea why vaguely and explicitly Asian names are used for the men (both tops and bottoms). Pitbull Sinks Teeth Into Gay Reality Porn

Gay Porn Review: Falcon's "From Top To Bottom"

"From Top To Bottom", Falcon's latest release, is based on such a simple premise it's amazing no one's ever done it before: Tops taking a dick for the first time.

The movie starts off with a bang: Billy Brandt bottoming for Erik Rhodes. Then Tyler Marks bottoms for newcomer Jake Jameson. New York City-based Dark Alley Media and Pitbull Productions' inaugural joint effort The Show (Part 1) is a tongue-in-ass riff on reality television that revels in the sexiness Black and Latino actors without resorting to clumsy race cliches.

Social anxiety (whether over weight, cock size or race) quickly reverts to caricature in porn. How else to take movies with titles like Chocolate Cake with White Topping, Black Magic White Heat if not as the sexualized descendants of Stepin Fetchit skits? Lucas' Heated Encounters

There are few things better than getting stuck in a porn rut. It's an ambitious project that Buckshot director John Rutherford pulls off with style and raw sexual energy.

Gay Twin Porn: Where Incest Meets Narcissism

There's a new set of sexy gay twins doing the porn rounds, but they haven't seemed to be able to settle on a name. In High Octane's Twin Towers (above, left), they're listed as Alex and Ian Lynch. In Studio 2000's Twin Devils (above, middle), they're listed as Jack and James LaCroix. In Bel Ami's Flings 2, they're listed as Daniel and Jean Lautrec.

There's little plot for the for the hardhat-and-wife-beater'd construction workers and that's just fine. GayVNs: Gay Porn's Superlative Lovefest

Outside observers assume that the porn industry is only after one thing -- your money. But the rise in popularity -- with both porn consumers and producers -- is a testament to industry's maturation. The average week brings ten new movies -- it's a lot of porn to watch, so you can't really blame producers are marshalling all their superlatives. But it doesn't mean all films are equal (we do, after all fully deserve to win Best Screenplay), we just need to start articulating better what makes them so good. As we approach the GayVN Awards (March 9, West Hollywood), we'll review some of our favorite moments from the 2005 year in porn. Here are the nominees:

Through an Ass Darkly

In the porn documentary The Making of Arabesque, Raging Stallion director Chris Ward explores a crucial visual difference between the films of Hollywood and those of the gay porn industry. Amidst some false starts and speculation among his fans as to what his next steps were (and some bogus claims he was going to re-emerge under a new persona called "Johnny America"), in 2005 he opened a medical marijuana club in San Francisco (three doors down from my house, no less). It's still legal to sell pot in CA thanks to Prop 215, but, in light of neo-con mania sweeping the nation, it's dicey and raids are a real possibility. I was afraid mentioning it might draw unwanted attention, so I refrained but then there was a big article about it in Unzipped a few months later, so I guess I was being over cautious. Anyway, it's called Sanctuary, and it's at O'Farrell and Hyde in SF. Sadly, it's not open to the public (unless you have a doctor's note) but if you do, definitely check it out.

Raging Stallion's Arabesque: Bjorn Again?

When we covered the filming of Raging Stallion's Arabesque in late July, the reaction was passionate -- rarely have I seen porn fans so aggressively question the nature of race, fantasy and the erotic. Cirque Noir: There's A Pussy In My Gay Porn!

Last year when Dennis Bell acquired the rights to the granddaddy of all gay porn studios, Athletic Model Guild, no one was quite sure what he was going to do with it. While somewhat tame by today's standards, Mizer's historical physique model portraits and wrestling movies paved the way to the gay porn we all know and love today. The collection of assets that Bob had created since the studios inception in the 1940s was tremendous -- over a million negatives and hundreds of reels of film and several pallets of videos, many unreleased.

While they've compiled and released some of the old stuff onto DVD in the past year (see Spanking Potpourri # 31 or Story Film Classics), it comes as no surprise that they'd start producing new hardcore stuff. Being released this week, "AMG Resurection: A New Beginning," pays homage to Mizer's iconic style, but bridges it to modern times with a truly stellar cast of favorites (Jason Adonis! Buckshot Slips Freudian With Beyond Perfect

Jumping To Conclusions: Falcon's Heaven To Hell

Lately I've been noticing a frustrating contradiction in the world of gay porn: On one hand porn fans are overwhelmingly bored by the mass predictability of porn. On the other hand, people freak out whenever anyone dares stray from the formula or try something new.

Case in point: Heaven to Hell, Chi Chi LaRue's directorial swan song for Falcon Studios. When they released some promo images, they were met with negative comments and even a few bad reviews (remarkable since review screeners didn't go out until a few weeks later). When people actually got around to watching it, most reviewers flipped for it, and not just because Brad Patton bottomed for the first time. The elaborate production -- feathers, tattoos, devil horns and all -- worked really well as a gay porn fantasia.

Gay Porn Shoot: Raging Stallion's Arabesque

With our military and cultural focus on Iraq, it's not surprising that Americans fetishize Arab men. But it is surprising that -- short of Abu Graib -- no one's shot an Arab gay porn. Until now.

I'll admit it. It's hard for me to get off to porn if I know the actors involved. There are exceptions, of course, but I'm often distracted by my feelings for the actor. Is he whiny? Limp.
