I shot an interview with Tom Chase yesterday, who was in town visiting his sister. He's now a personal trainer in Dallas, but was eager to talk to us for our documentary on Falcon's Chuck Holmes. We talked about his history with Holmes, but even more about how the porn he watched growing up -- particularly the Falcon video Cruisin'. Falcon and COLT movies were, he told us, the representations of gay male identity that he grew up emulating.

"I knew I had to get to San Francisco," he told us. "Chuck was one of the people who completely changed the culture, the image of a gay man. At the time, the only place for us to find [positive] role models was in porn."

He later went on to marry Joe Cade, one of the stars he'd been masturbating to for years. (They're no longer together). I'll post a clip of the interview when we've got a second to go through some of the footage, and you can see the handsome man he became, but in the meantime, a masturbator's delight of Tom Chase through the years. He insisted that Falcon (and later COLT) let him grow up before the camera -- and thank god he did!

Ever since the gay porn industry started, studios have struggled to define themselves by their men. From COLT's beefcake and Falcon's blond brats, to the jocks of Jet Set and the tough musclemen of Raging Stallion, men are your brand. All that's well and good when you're trying to set yourself apart, but those niches can leave a few gay holes. We are shocked and utterly devastated to report that Danny Roddick died Thursday, according to a press release issued by COLT, the studio he was an exclusive with. The cause of death has not been released.

An extremely talented star who was on the verge of becoming a superstar, Danny debuted in Buckshot's HARD Studies in 2005, and has since appeared in Boot Black Blues, Big Rig, and Hostile. He's stars in Jerry Douglas' Brotherhood, and AMG Brasil's upcoming Amazônia: Capture & Release (where he was revealed to be the "gay porn star Mystery Man").

A Northern California native, Danny was also a hair stylist and romantically linked to fellow Buckshot Man Alex Chandler until earlier this year. No word on when or if a memorial service in his honor will be held. We will be posting information as it becomes available.

Our sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

The little green mask has been peeled away and AMG Brasil's mystery porn star has been revealed. It is, in fact, Buckshot Man Danny Roddick, as several commenters on our original entry had guessed.

People often deride porn as flat medium with only lurid visual appeal -- and with its graphic imagery, it's easy to make that assumption. But we don't have sex with our eyeballs -- the hottest stuff takes place inside our heads (and hands).

A year ago COLT Studio Group President John Rutherford and screenwriter Jerry Douglas finished shooting the gay porn cowboy epic Buckleroos for the studio's Buckshot Productions line. The film went on to take home top honors at both the GayVN Awards and the Grabbys, proving that the legendary COLT Studio had been revived and reinvigorated with a storyline that paid as much attention to emotion as it did motion. This year, the Rutherford/Douglas team is taking the heat from farm directly to the frontal lobe. Analysis will never be the same.

When I'm forced to mingle with people outside the gay porn world at dinner parties, weddings and the like, few things bring me more joy than the look in people's faces when I tell them what I do for a living. Regardless of who it is or how much shock they feign at first, everyone always wants to know what it's like to be on a porn set.

Here's the sad truth, people: It can be pretty fucking dull. I ain't complaining -- it's a hell of a lot more fun than working in an office, but at the end of the day, a job's a job whether you're counting beans or wiping sweat out of Rod Barry's crack.

Porn director John Rutherford is a helluva sweet guy. In his lengthy run as head of the Falcon Family of Companies (Falcon, Mustang, Jocks et. al.), Rutherford directed some of the top gay porn videos of the last decade, including some of my personal faves Big River, The Crush, Current Affairs and Red Alert.

When he left Falcon to reinvigorate vintage porn studio COLT, many were shocked. What would the man who helped elevate Falcon to what it is today be able to bring to Colt? And was it true -- was Rutherford going to allow his models to (gasp!) smile on camera (have you ever seen a Falcon model smile?)

Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the new San Francisco offices of Colt Studio and met with John Rutherford, the new owner of Colt and former president of Falcon Studios. In a unique coincidence, the new Colt office is in the same building (one floor below) that housed Falcon for many years in the 1990's. Now that the dust has settled, both companies are on their own paths to the porn future, so I thought this would be a good time to interview Mr. Rutherford to find out his plans, and re-trace how he got to this point.

Rutherford said, "It all started about a year ago with Falcon lifetime exclusive Tom Chase. Tom has become more interested in bodybuilding and less and less interested in performing in movies, but he asked for permission to appear in a Colt movie." Rutherford encouraged Chase to take the offer from Colt because he felt that, at the time, Colt was not in competition with Falcon.

Through Tom Chase's association with Colt, Rutherford got wind that Colt was for sale. "I initially thought Colt would be a good property for Falcon to purchase, but when I presented the idea to the board of directors, they turned down the idea," said Rutherford. Then in November 2002 Colt founder and chief creative force, Jim French, requested a meeting with Rutherford. The two had never met and Rutherford was honored with the invitation.

In the meantime, John Rutherford was feeling unhappy with his role at Falcon. "After being involved in 280 movies and spending most of my career in a creative capacity, I found I was becoming more and more involved in adminstration and less and less involved in creative aspects." In March of 2003 Rutherford dropped a bombshell that he was giving notice with no real plans of what to do next. "I probably would have just done my own 'John Rutherford' line of videos once in a while right out of my garage." It was after he left his employer of 14 years that the idea of owning Colt Studio came into being.

The move from LA to San Francisco carrying a body of work spanning 36 years was arduous, but had it's comic elements, too. "Of the 4 trucks used, one got stopped by the cops on I-5 for being overloaded in the back. The police made them shift the contents to balance the load, causing everything to topple over. Photos, flyers, papers all went flying! Some gay guys happened to be around and recognized it was Colt material!"

As for Rutherford's plans, he will be concentrating on shooting new productions in the Colt style. Jim French is still shooting still photography, and Colt will continue producing videos through it's various lines: Colt, Buckshot, Minutemen, Spurs, and Colt International. John also has plans to introduce a new line of videos called Pony Studios featuring Colt men 18-22 years old.

We spent a good deal of time discussing the incredible body of work in the Colt archive. A total of 70 titles exist, but only 30% have been transferred to DVD, so expect more to come. Rutherford feels a "responsibility" in preserving this material for future generations and "treating with respect". It seems a firm plan for the vintage Colt material has not been decided yet, and won't be until it's properly reviewed and catalogued. Unlike Rutherford, Jim French's passion was more on still photography than video, which gets lends itself perfectly to being showcased in the membership section of their website www.coltstudio.com.
