Kim Davis’ Carter County Detention Center mug shot

In court on Thursday, U.S. District Judge David Bunning said he doesn’t think Rowan County clerk Kim Davis is combative and he he didn’t make the decision lightly. She has refused to issues licenses because of her religious beliefs about gay marriage.

But, Bunning said, “Her good faith belief is simply not a viable defense.”

Bunning also spoke of his own religious beliefs. But he said that the oath he took, and the oath Davis took, supersedes those beliefs.

Five of the six deputy clerks told Judge Bunning that will hand out marriage licenses to gay couples beginning Friday. The lone holdout is Davis’ son.

The White House says no one is above the law, including a Kentucky county clerk who was sent to jail for contempt after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Original Story: September 2, 2015

I mentioned Monday that Kim Davis’ refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in Rowan County, KY prompted a federal judge to summon her – and her staff – into court today. As for last night, however, Kim Davis got dutifully owned on national television – twice.

Davis is the duplicitous thrice-times divorced, four-times married self-anointed arbiter of the marital high ground. This “Soldier of her Savior” deems gay couples unworthy of this very Constitutional right she has enjoyed time, and time, and time, and time again. Her continued obstruction has become a reality show where the separation of church and state is taken as seriously as climate change at a Mike Huckabee rally.

But wait, there’s more. Seems the upright, forthright Mrs. Davis, according to the US News and World Report, “gave birth to twins five months after divorcing her first husband, (and) they were fathered by her third husband but adopted by her second husband.” Way to keep it classy, Kim.

Davis is being represented by Mat Staver, a lawyer, founding member and Chairman of the Liberty Council. Staver has been trying to make Davis the face of religious martyrdom in the post-Obergefell era.

Staver went on MSNBC’s Hardball last night to plead the case on behalf of Davis and all “decent Christians.” Perhaps Staver thought since Chris Matthews had the night off, he would be running the conversation his way. I did not go well.

The next hour, Alex Wagner saw to it that Davis got the “Savage Treatment.” This went well.

Can’t wait to see what happens in court today!
