TRAVIS MATHEWS AND JAMES FRANCO GO ‘CRUISING’ AT SUNDANCE

Director Travis Mathews (In Their RoomI Want Your Love) paired with James Franco (kink) on the actor’s second bdsm porn film at Sundance this year, Interior. Leather Bar

Interior. Leather Bar.

Sneak peak, after the jump …

According to Mathews:

In order to avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of gay S&M footage was rumored to be cut and destroyed from the 1980 film, “Cruising.” Inspired by the mythology of this controversial film, filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to imagine their own lost footage.
Amid the backdrop of a frenzied film set actor Val Lauren reluctantly agrees to take the lead in the film. Val is repeatedly forced to negotiate his boundaries during scenes on and “off camera,” as unsimulated gay sex happens around him. The film itself is constructed as a play with boundaries remaining queer in subject and form. As much a film about filmmaking as it is about an exploration of sexual and creative freedom, “Interior. Leather Bar.” defies easy categorization.

Mathews, of course, is the master of convincing non-porn stars to have sex on screen. Interior. Leather Bar., is no different — mostly. But if you look carefully, you’ll see a more familiar master … one who’s no amateur. Can you identify him?

The version of “Cruising,” on Netflix is the uncut version. Let me tell you: It leaves little to the imagination. We watched it and our mouths dropped!!! The only way additional footage could be added would literally be to have a full XXX film.

Ha, Derek, calm down, it’s not THAT graphic. That said, there are XXX inserts during the murder sequences. Watch in slow-mo and see that whenever the knife enters a victim, there is a subliminal frame or two of XXX gay sex penetration from a 70s porno movie (unidentified).

I wish people would stop promoting this as a collaboration with James Franco. Sincerely doubt he did any directing on this. He also didn’t direct KINK, he merely produced it. He’s the Andy Warhol of the 21st century, doing nothing on films that he attaches his name to.

I was 23 at the time when the original Al Pacino “Cruising” came out. Just like you Derek, it was mind-blowing. Nothing like anything I have ever seen at that time. It made you think hard about leaving a bar with a stranger to have sex. Many gay men I knew at that time were scare shit about going to the bars. It wasn’t a popular movie, and in fact, many gay groups considered it defamatory toward gays. This was about the time when there were several well known criminals who took pleasure toward gay men and boys like Jeffrey Dahmar,John Wayne Gacy, and Randy Steven Kraft, who would use erotic asphyxiation on his victims. About the only thing left now is to do a “snuff movie” to get people off
