The Latest Shame Game From Michael Weinstein And The AHF
Their new billboards visually link use of the apps to gonorrhea and chlamydia. Their rhetoric is even worse:
Mobile dating apps are rapidly altering the sexual landscape by making casual sex as easily available as ordering a pizza. In many ways, location-based mobile dating apps are becoming a digital bathhouse for millennials wherein the next sexual encounter can literally be just a few feet away — as well as the next STD. ~ Whitney Engeran-Cordova, Senior Director, Public Health Division, AHF
Dating apps are a different route to get to what we have been doing for years. You are fighting the wrong battle here, Weinstein, and even then you are fighting it the wrong way by demanding we all toe the line as your foot soldiers.
Actions show what you are committed to. There is no better decision maker than the smart choices that come from self-empowerment. Yet you are putting considerable effort, expense, and energy into making us feel bad for being sexual creatures.
Do hook-up apps make it easy to seal the sexual deal. Sure they do. But millennials didn’t invent hooking up. Long before phone apps would have been the work of science fiction, people found a way to connect and have sex that did not begin in bath houses or end with a diagnosis. The difference is, back then, those that warned you about communicable diseases were not profiting from testing and treating you.
Does this surprise me coming from a group that is trying to legislate that any California resident can lawfully make a citizen’s arrest if they spot barebacking in a porn film?
Am I shocked this would be the latest move from an organization that is trying to subpoena porn performers’ medical records?
No. I am used to it by now. But the disappointment doesn’t ebb and is astutely captured by the Free Speech Coalition (FSC) president:
“This shows just how radical Mike Weinstein is. Not only does he want to control how everyone has sex, but now apparently also with whom. ~Diane Duke, CEO, Free Speech Coalition
Michael Weinstein first called “PrEP” a party drug. Now it’s hook up apps cause STD’s.
Michael Weinstein speaks to each one of us as if we are brainless sluts.
His message is not one of hope and education — but fear and shame.
Michael Weinstein … shame on you!
