Paul Priore is a former Yankees assistant equipment manager and was fired in 1997 for allegedly being HIV positive. Apparently he spent the next ten years chronicling his alleged abuse and team scandals he observed during his tenure tending to the toys of the Bronx Bombers. Eight years later, Abused By The New York Yankees has been self-published and released as an “e-book.” But is it almost too juicy too be true?

While the 515 page opus has been acknowledged for bits of truth from baseball blogger Bernadette Pasley, she also states “is so wrought with inconsistencies and outright factual errors that it’s hard to
take anything else in it seriously.”

The juiciest item is right at the top of the list:

• Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada engaged in sexual relations in the clubhouse sauna at the end of their first season with the team. Jeter and Posada then allowed Priore to perform oral sex on them in order to keep him quiet.
• George Steinbrenner spied on players using secret security cameras in the clubhouse, and was actively involved in the Iran-Contra Affair.
• Outfielder Gerald Williams had sex with an underage concession stand worker in a storage closet.
• Cecil Fielder played drunk on vodka, and Darryl Strawberry drank whisky during games.
• Bob Wickman, Jeff Nelson and Mariano Rivera tried to sexually assault him with a baseball bat.

Co-author Gary Toushek has taken to YouTube in an almost twenty minute monologue of his own where he almost begs for “Abused By The New York Yankees” to be taken as Pulitzer prize-worthy journalism. If I were George, I wouldn’t be worrying about what to wear to the awards ceremony just yet.
