Ugliest anti-porn activist ever dies

andrea_dworkin.jpgRadical feminist Andrea Dworkin, who is perhaps best known for her scathing discourses against (straight) porn and its effect on women (and sort of said that all sex was rape), is dead at 58. Susie Bright talks about her mixed feelings … Rush Limbaugh rejoices.

She was a tool of the right. Over the top, penis hating, crazed woman.

Guys, what a bunch of fucking clowns you’re being. Andrea Dworkin was a staunch pro-gay activist. She didn’t hate men (she married one) but she did hate homophobia and misogyny. She was hated by the right (they called her a flithy dyke remember?) and shunned by the flimsiest parts of the left (too political). She got enough abuse from them – don’t do their work for them.

Okay, but she still was ugly. In the words of Pee Wee Herman, I’ve seen better heads on boils.

Uhm, some of the commentators may be “clowns”, but you are ignoring documented facts regarding Dworkin & the religious right here in the US. Some of the right may have called her a “filthy dyke”, but a lot of them were more than happy to incorporate Dworkin’s & her co-hort Mackinnon’s views of pornography into their agenda. D & M, after all, were the authors of the attempt to ban pornography in the 1984 Indianapolis civic ordinance (by making it legally actionable). That alone was a rallying call to that sex-phobic section of the right here in the states that includes former Attorneys General Meese & Ashcroft and their various attempts to squash porn.

Their (D & M’s) neo-Bolshevikian view of sex and porn (You are either anti-porn or you are the enemy) would have had chilling effects if implemented against heterosexual pornography, and I think that you are kidding yourself if you think that it wouldn’t have had an effect on gay & lesbian porn as well, not to mention First Amendment freedoms in general. In fact, while she may have been called a “dyke” and been pro-gay rights, some of Dworkin’s biggest critics have been part of the pro-sex lesbian feminist contingent that sprang to life in the mid-70s (Susie Bright, for example).

It’s sad that her most objectionable crime was that she was ugly. As much as she was vilified in her life, she did raise some questions no one wanted to talk about and changed the conversation. Porn puts out some great stuff, especially for gay men. It would be wrong to ignore the fact that porn has an ugly side, maybe uglier than Ms. Dworkin ever was.
