Steve Cruz To Break From Performing to Focus on Directing

Steve Cruz is one porn star we never tire of writing about. When I heard that he’ll be co-directing his first movie, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to probe him deeper on the subject (I love chatting with him but I always got the feeling he enjoys being probed anyway).

We discussed his directorial influences, if he’s still a Raging Stallion Exclusive, and what exactly it is that a porn director does anyway. “Blue Movie” (an homage to 1970s and ’80s porn which he’s co-directing with Leif Gobo for Mustang) should be released in December but until then check out the interview after the jump …

So does working for Falcon’s Mustang line mean you’re done with your contract with RS?
I have Chris Ward’s blessing to direct for Falcon; he thinks its a great opportunity and he’d never hold me back. Also I decided not to put myself in my own films. I’m taking a break from performing for a while. When — and if — I decide to return I am sure Chris would love to have me back anytime.

Who are your favorite porn directors?
I have heroes for many reasons: Chris Ward for the way he marries the spirit of big Hollywood film to his work … but also because when it comes to directing sex he’s a pro. His sex scenes are the most genuine because he really knows how to inspire a great performance out his guys. Bruce Cam has a talent for placing beautiful men in beautiful settings, and he’s produced some of the most gorgeous gay films ever made. His early work is some of my favorite — Desert Train, Island Guardian.

Chi Chi LaRue knows how to shoot a nasty film … The Link series is a favorite. Aftershock is another. Wrong Side of the Tracks, all time favorite! Jim French is a god. The classic COLT movies really do it for me. They were really extensions of his photographic work. Each alive with a carefree spirit of joyful sexuality rather than the nuts and bolts fucking we shoot today. “Hot Cop” is to die for!

What about favorite mainstream directors?
Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Roman Polanski and Alfred Hitchcock. Guilty Pleasure: Russ Meyer.

leif_gobo_steve_cruz.jpg

What are you doing to prepare for directing?
Waking up in the middle of the night and writing down what comes to me… Last month it was story-boarding and set design. This month its casting, picking the right guys for the job and finding them partners they can get excited about. The last production I had to learn how to be flexible while still keeping the integrity of the original vision in tact. And being open to what happens… the magic of chance. I have a lot of cool ideas but I admit I have plenty to learn about the technical aspects of what we do.. so really I’ll be absorbing all I can from Leif Gobo’s 12 years of experience.

How does directing a gay porn ential? How does a director inspire realistic and passionate performances without ruining the moment?
There lots of ways you can direct. I had one director spend the whole day on the phone with his boss while we directed ourselves which was fine. Then I’ve been micro-managed while everyone deliberates the perfect shot every half hour. Long days kill chemistry and drain energy from a film. You can only do so much in the editing room.

I want to be the kind of director that returns to basics of what makes porn hot, the chemistry of hot sex. Its in the casting and setting a stage, planning your shot list and so forth… but its also in the atmosphere you create on a set. As a performer I understand their job better than anyone. I hope I can use that experience to inspire something special.

This is not surprising at all. Most other Raging Stallion performers also get to direct too. Some performers know they are over exposed (appearing in every RS release lately) so find some reason to stay around. This is a movement that has been happening alot lately. Other than Michael Brandon, I dont recall another RS performer with any good videos in the director chair. WHat is he going to do? Put all the same RS performers in the video that appear in all the others? Not exciting, sorry!

I checked out that other porn actor Jason Ridge’s latest directing pic…absolutley nothing arousing about models that look worse that the guys next door, body wise..boring scenes…def wouldn’t be renting anymore…if you can’t do something different than the ususaly porn..why bother… it’s a waste of film..:-(((

A question. Why does almost every porn start with foreplay, oral, rimming and then fucking. Why can’t they play around in clothes, then underwear, then rim, kiss and then blow job, then go to a bed and make love not positions! The guys are usually fantastic, they have the bodies, equipment, everything, the formula for porn is tired, it needs a lot more imigination and fun and real sexiness it doesn’t have now. I repeat it’s not the performers it’s the directors, budgets and the mind set of the industry. I don’t buy or rent porn anymore it’s too expensive and it’s the same tired format. They even have it in the DVD’s menu. Foreplay, oral, rim, fucking. That’s sad.

Well, Roy, all I can say is that I always read about how people want to see something different, but whenever someone makes something different, it either gets ignored or (more often the case) shot down with negative comments, so they stop trying.

If you truly want something different, you have to support the company that tries, even if you don’t like the outcome. This will encourage us to try new things and break established patterns.

Another amateur to direct for Falcon/Mustang? Just when I thought Falcon was getting serious again. No experience, no worries! We hire anyone!

Hey everyone. Isn’t Ken GREAT, what a fucking heart-attack on a lovely day. Steve Cruz will be awesome! I think we’re witnessing the birth of a new and potentially amazing talent! He’s a sexy MF’er as a performer and I have a feeling he’ll throw down as a director.

If Steve Cruz as director can get the same authenticity he projects as an actor, then I think his films will be a big plus. He’s intelligent and sensual and sexy. I expect his directing will be the same.

Well Mustang needs some new directors. They have some hot stars but the directing is terrible. Face shot, sausage shot and maybe one shot where you can see the whole faces, bodies and action. We want to see who is fucking – is that too much to ask??????

Their films are so bad. I might give Steve Cruz my last chance at their films. ugh.

Not sure I agree with you, Cranky. The last two videos I saw from Mustang were hot, hot, hot. Check out CRUISIN’GROUNDS. No offense to Cruz, but putting an inexperienced director at the helm to direct for a major studio spells disaster. Bad move.

The idea of Steve Cruz who has never directed before, teaming up with Gobo, a so so director, is quite a gamble for Falcon. But I guess if ya got money to burn it can be be done.

With all the blessings and pride given to Cruz from Chi Chi and Chris Ward, how come one of them wasn’t the first to take the gamble in hiring an inexperienced director? The hype and b.s. in the press release makes me want to gag. Stay in front of the camera Steve, where you belong. It only takes one director to do the job. Appears there is far too many chiefs and not enough Indians at Falcon.

Is it true that a nasty email from a tantrum throwing whiny director to a verbally abusive director is about to surface? Throwing peers (that you’ve never even worked with) under a bus is NEVER a good idea – especially when you write it all in an email. What an extreme douche-bag. Karma is why you wallow in c-list oblivion. Now we ALL know who the poster is on here hiding behind several different names. Ha.

Per the comment by Drew of Sept. 8: “the guys (sic) a stuck up asshole!” Don’t know or care why the obvious hostility, but I can attest that Mr. Cruz is nothing near it. I have had the privilege of communicating by e-mail privately, and every communication has been responded to, one of them about lessons in humility and discipline. I find him to be a person of both substance and intelligence, and I’m pretty certain he’s classy enough not to stoop to the gutter of name-calling. There has to be a reason why Steve Cruz has become a headliner as a model; I have no doubt he’ll do likewise as a director. His achievements in both roles will do his talking for him.

Nothing but courteous and humble off-screen. Looks like one of the hardest working men in porn, especially with some of the lame, screw-for-pay performers out there. Takes time out to answer personal emails with appreciation. A rare piece of ‘good people’ in an industry that one can only assume as a few bad apples. Bravo Steve!

I want to wish Steve all the best in his directorial debut. It’s a hard business to break into both as a model and as a director, so to not wish Steve well is rude and petty. All he wants is his shot at it. With his enthusiasm for the project, we all know he’ll give it his best. So what if he doesn’t hit a home run the first film or two? Steve will learn from any choices he makes that don’t turn out in his favor. He’s a genuine gentleman and he has a good heart. Please let him follow his dream, and encourage Steve rather than criticize him.

You mentioned MySpace. Did you try to contact me there? I have to admit I don’t read my MySpace mail because too often its been spam. Best way to reach me is direct through my website, not MySpace. I try to answer everyone, but I admit its not always easy to keep up. I only shut out guys that are rude or disrespectful to normal boundaries. If you’re a nice guy, especially a fan, I don’t see why I wouldn’t respond, unless it was on MySpace as I mentioned before- I just accept friends there, I stopped reading messages there due to the SPAM. If you felt I snubbed you, try me again this time direct in a personal email. Otherwise thanks for once being a fan, whatever happened sorry it ended in disappointment for you.

Ok I need to disappear into mediocrity now. LATER! LOL! :-D

Lots of the complaints seem to be “no experience”. So f’ing what? Spielberg once had no experience,George Lucas, Hitchcock, etc. At least you are trying somethng different. I wonder how many of the guys who have commented about your lack of experience ever tried to do something new to enrich their lives. Or are they stuck in the same old rat race all of their life.
Those guys are going to have a hell of a time voting in November (if they do vote) since each of the parties has a person with “no experience”.

Steve Cruz is the best and the hottest performer I’ve ever seen on film (Lords of the Jungle, Hotter Than Hell 1 & 2 are 3 of my favorite movies from Raging Stallion, as well as Link-The Evolution from All Worlds Video. The Director’s Cut of Link-The Evolution is DA BOMB!!!). I’m a huge fan of him and he’s the jack-of-all-trades – director, screenwriter, website design (his website is DA BOMB!!! SLAMMIN’!!! OFF DA HOOK!!!), graphics design, and a whiz at playing the bass guitar! I will never get to meet him in person, but I’m hoping I will someday, and to learn from him because he’s my idol, and I’ve always dreamed of working with him behind the scenes and in graphics design (I’m a Legal Assistant who supports 5 attorneys in all areas of law, but 40% of my time consists of updating the law firm’s website on a bi-monthly basis). From reading the comments and interviews, he’s very nice, friendly, easy to get along with, and very sociable. And to Joe Kerekes who stated, “Steve is one narcisstic asswipe. He is so stuck up! He will suck as a director.” How in the world can you say such derogatory things about him like that? You don’t even know him. I don’t know him either and I’m a good judge of character, but you can’t say nasty things like that if you’ve never met him. Steve, if you’re reading this, I want you to know that I will always be one of your biggest fans, and I will miss you being in front of the camera, but I also look forward to seeing you in your directorial venture (I’m priority over everyone else, so I should be on the top of your priority list and you can send me copies of your movies before everyone else lol. Just kidding lol). Don’t let those negative comments get to you because they don’t know you at all. Take excellent care, don’t work too hard and God bless you :) YOU ROCK BRO!!!
