Spotlight: Mason Wyler
Rising star Mason Wyler, focus of yesterday’s post on Down The Drain, gives me the perfect transition to discuss a trend I’ve been noticing a lot lately: Guys jumping back and forth between modeling for amateur sites and starring in big studio productions.
Mason first cropped up on CorbinFisher.com earlier last year. His perfect swimmer’s build, expert deep-throating abilities and emotive bottoming performances made him a real stand-out. He was such a big hit that Corbin featured him — farmer’s tan and all — in their “Farmer’s Daughter Has A Brother” print ad campaign, currently running in various gay mags (right). A few months ago, I was pleased to learn that he’d been cast as the pass-around bottom star in Falcon’s upcoming “Spokes 3”, since he seemed perfect (Mike and I knew, when we wrote the script, that it’d be a hard role to cast). So imagine my surprise when I later saw him showing up on in clips and photosets on Randy Blue.

I can’t get enough of the Mason, so I’m not complaining, but it sort of poses the question about the meaning of “amateur”. Should starring in several big studio productions, by definition, prevent you from being in the amateur set? Again, don’t get me wrong: anyone who gets to use him is lucky. It’ll just be interesting to see what he chooses to do next.

I maintain that guys like Mason and Sean Cody’s Patrick can no longer call themselves “straight,” if they ever really did. Any man who reads a script about getting buggered senseless by nine different guys and thinks “Ooh, that’s for me!” cannot lay claim to that word.

I always thought that “amateur” by definition applied more to the production itself than the performers… I think a lot of performers (myself included) jump back and forth between amateur and the “big studios” because on our end (pun intended) there is no difference. Major studios have “amateur lines” or web shows, and some amateur studios actually pay more than the “Big” Studios…
Why am I speaking in “Quotes”?
Basically, its all about the $, right?

I agree with Damon. The amateur label applies to the production and its style more than the performers. Nothing wrong with them progressing into the pro league and still doing some sites. It’s just more opportunity to watch these gorgeous guys do what they do best. Speaking of SeanCody’s Patrick when is he going to do some major studio work because he is too hot.

I actually prefer a lot of amateur works as compared to the big studio ones. And I think it’s true that the label is to the production, and not the actors themselves.

I love amateur productions of straight guys. For me, nothing is hotter than seeing two straight guys get it on. But, I always have a nagging question in the back of my head along the lines of “Is this site’s claims of ‘straightness abound’ real?” I mean, it’s always a little disappointing to find out that a guy claiming to be straight never was in the first place. Conversely, it’s exciting when a straight guy discovers he kinda like teh gay. :)

Someone mentioned Mason looks like Ryan Gosling, but to me he reminded me of ‘very young version of’ Matthew Fox without facial hair. That idea makes me HOT. I wish next movie Mason sport some facial hair on him…..

While i think that mason is an up and coming gay porn hottie. I am a little curious how this blog can say that it was his year. Hmmm. There have been a lot of stars that have more than put him in the shadows. Francesco D’Macho, Matt Cole, Trevor Knight, and Brad Patton just to name a few, have done more movies than him this year alone. I am not sure you can say it was someone’s year with the other folks who have worked their asses off being around
