RuPaul Takes Chi Chi LaRue for A Drive … and Where They Go Might Surprise You

The latest episode of RuPaul’s web series RuPaul Drives (where the veteran drag queen drives around Los Angeles with various celebrities in her super-cute red vintage Volvo), RuPaul picks up none other than Chi Chi LaRue and dishes with the legendary director about everything from his newest exclusive to Chi Chi’s favorite movie he directed in his 28 years making porn (anyone care to guess which movie it is? Clue: It stars Johnny Hazzard).

They also talk rather frankly about the “diminishing” economics of porn in light of the glut of free gay porn on the internet and it’s effect on the landscape of studio production. Chi Chi even reveals the question everyone always wants to know: exactly how much do gay porn stars get paid for a scene (and the somewhat shocking discrepancy compared to what they were getting paid just a few year ago).

Despite the pessimistic economic forecast, the video is quite charming and it’s somewhat of a treat to get a front-row seat to two old friends having a bona fide kiki …

That’s actually the best ChiChi interview I’ve ever seen. And he’s done a lot of them.

Porn studios share half the blame for declining revenues.

I won’t commit at least $25 for a month when at least half the models on most sites are covered in tattoos. And there needs to be a paradigm shift in porn production. How many times can we watch guys fuck in a room. Same basic positions; same basic location. Quantity does not equal quality. Spend more money on a single worthwhile scene and let me pay a fee for that one video.

Corbin Fisher has done a version of this with their pay-per-episode CF Select site and they should be commended for the attempt. But half the time I never remember to check it out. Every porn site should include an option of either paying a monthly fee for all videos or a one-time charge for a specific scene.

There is more than one way to view RuPaul interviewing Chi Chi LaRue. And, RuPaul’s reference to his Algonquin Round Table consisting of him and LaRue has to have caused more than one person to laugh.

I suppose it is possible to under estimate how much “skill” it takes to maintain the brand RuPaul and how much real work it takes to be a Chi Chi LaRue. However, bigger people than RuPaul and LaRue (like Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Barbara Walters) have had to face the fact that they’d stayed on the stage too long.
