Porn Star Derek Chambers Tests Positive, Blames Gay Sex With a Condom

Derek Chambers, a gay-for-pay porn star best known for his work with Jet Set Men, says he tested positive after a gay shoot in September. The actor spoke with the Los Angeles Times earlier this week, immediately igniting a firestorm over safe sex on porn sets.

Part of the storm is that Chambers claims he got HIV on a set where condoms were being used (albeit not for oral sex). Chambers, who also works in straight porn name under the name Cameron Reid, says he doesn’t have gay sex off-set, or sex with anyone besides his girlfriend in his regular life — therefore he must have gotten it on the September shoot. Because the claims have threatened to shut down production on even safe sex sets — and so far been used to deny a license to an industry testing center — the Chambers story has come under fire from industry sources who feel he’s not telling everything.

For example, perhaps he’s not so straight. After the jump, an interview we found from September, where Chambers says that he actually prefers shooting gay porn, that it was “something he’s always wanted to get into” and that he loves getting fucked. His scene with Jamesson had him, in his words “on Cloud Nine.” His girlfriend has got to be just a little confused.
The interview starts with James Jamesson — Derek Chambers comes in around 2:45.

And while the ad is down, he’s had an ad on Rentboy:

Also, Chambers original interview with the LA Times.
We should also note that despite the fact that Jamesson and Chambers filmed a scene in September, Chambers filmed multiple other scenes that month as well, and we don’t mean to imply that Jamesson was the “known positive” mentioned by the LA Times.

The problem here is that he claims he got it on a gay porn set where there were condoms, but is lambasting the straight industry for “bareback” and “testing.” It’s unclear what he wants, which makes me think he’s trying to cover something up, aka, sex with men off set.

This is the problem with gay4pay. they are in denial about sexuality and as a result engage in high risk behaviors off-set.

Not only that, but he also had a rentboy profile.

I cant believe some of you guys and “blaming” the victim. He says he only had sex with his girlfriend outside the porn industry and she tested negative. He thinks it may have been from an oral scene. It is rare to catch HIV from oral sex, yes it is less risky but it does happen.
I commend his bravery for coming out. The senseless attacks on him are baseless.

I think it funny that there isn’t much talk about how maybe he’s sleeping with multiple women and that maybe a guy didn’t get him infected…regardless of whether he fucks them on and off screen or not.

Straight porn performers have become positive doing straight porn. It seems to me that this guy is trying to point the blame at gay men. And yes you can contract HIV through oral sex so doing these porn whether it’s gay or straight and having oral sex without a condom still puts you at high risk.

It’s difficult to get it orally, and depends on a host of factors. But it’s especially different on porn sets — the ejaculation almost always takes place on the face, not in the mouth. And people on sets are much more sensitive to the types of open sores and cuts on a performer’s mouth. Not impossible, but not the same chance of infection as you would see in private use, which is already remote.

But the “known positive” is almost certainly on the gay side. When a straight performer tests positive, there’s an industry wide alert — as there was in September and also back in 2004.

As a result of all this AIM — the one place that’s doing testing and issuing alerts, has had their job made harder. Meanwhile, the gay industry — which mostly uses condoms — has been blamed despite the fact that there were condoms used. The fact that the two groups in the industry actually working to reduce transmission, have effectively been blamed is unfortunate.

My heart goes out to Derrick, and I’m sure he’s distraught and angry — but this is making an already overly political and complicated issue even more fraught. He shouldn’t be blamed, but the finger pointing in the press is regrettable as well if we’re attempting to reach a solution.

I understand you wanting to protect the industry….but starting a witch hunt against this boy is the wrong approach. He is the one that got HIV because of porn….that is the truth, and it is clearly the most likely situation. Lambasting him for it doesn’t help anyone. It’s just a difficult period that we can all learn from, and hopefully safer sex practices and testing can be implemented in the industry.

I think it’s crazy to employ known HIV positive performers in porn like some of the studios are doing now.

No one seems to be talking about his Rentboy ad, where the claim “AIM Tested” implies, to me anyway, that he was open to barebacking with clients.

I love that everyone has an opinion on this. They do porn. Porn. It was never intended to be a safe and reputable field. The fact that the gay community touts it as its shining right arm is probably not such a great thing. And part of that inherent risk factor is why we watch because we delight in well groomed young men deliberately increasing their odds of VD contraction.

They’re not receptionists and store clerks, their in the ancient tradition of sex work that was never intended, or expected to be entirely safe.

It is unfair to attack him like this.
He does make a valid point as far as the inadequacy of the one month testing rule is concerned..

The systems in place are far from fail safe or fool proof.

I want to be sympathetic, but this guy needs to take some responsiblity for his action. He decided to be in porn and have unprotected sex. He decided to have someone cum in his mouth and he decided to give up his ass for money.

    1. The blame-the-victim thing sucks. Knock it off.

    2. The blame-the-victim thing looks a hell of a lot more sinister when it’s coming from “industry sources” who see their bottom lines threatened by news of an infection on-set.

    3. Condoms are not perfect. In some studies they have been shown to have as little as 90% effectiveness. Imagine the number of times a porn actor gets fucked (even with a condom) and do the math. Just because condoms were used on set, it is NOT impossible (or even particularly unbelievable) that an actor became infected through that means.

    4. The industry could dramatically increase actors’ safety if it wanted to. It could require both condom use AND on-site testing prior to filming. With serosorted couples using a latex barrier, the risk of transmission would be exceptionally low.

I agree with Bob. These are sex workers. And while they can take all the precations they want to minimize thier risk, the bottom line is there is still a degree of risk involved, and as adults, they are aware of this. It’s too bad this guy contracted HIV, and I certainly hope he still lives a long, healthy life. But as a sex industry worker, you know what you’re getting yourself into ahead of time. Let’s hope all sex worker industry workers continue to play safer, and keep thier risks low.

The headline here is sarcastic, mocking and wrong. He is not blaming sex with a condom for HIV. He is blaming oral sex WITHOUT a condom for HIV infection. It is more common than most believe.

    Horrible choice of a headline.

The guy worked as a prostutitue, A PROSTITUTE!. So blaming his contracting HIV on his choices and lifestyle is not ‘blaming the victim’, it’s common sense!

    @Jay:

The word “prostitute” may have some kind of shock value for you, but it doesn’t actually prove your point or particularly mean anything to this discussion.

We know he had a Rentboy profile. We do not know if he ever received any clients, or if he had sex with them. He says no. I have no reason to believe the extremely corrupt industry’s smear campaign over his own word on the subject.

Moreover, there is little difference between having sex for money and having sex with a random guy from a bar who you thought kinda looked like a Backstreet Boy. Both carry the same risk of the unknown.

I don’t think these KIDS know the risks they are taking on. They’re barely past adolescence. And people like Chi Chi LaRue make statements like “it’s impossible to get an STI on a porn set.” (That’s a near quote!) Sad.

Are you freaking kidding me? These so called porn stars have sex with hundreds of people a year. And if you are in the straight porn industry, non safe sex is almost an absolute. They don’t want to have anything to do with condoms, because they detract too many customers. Chlamydia, gonorrhea and other diseases are quite common

  22. Jay December 15th, 2010 at 7:42 PM

He didn’t have a Rentboy profile to make friends ‘Modena’. He had it to contact possible customers; sex customers that is. That’s not a ‘smear campaign’, it’s reality. I’m sorry, but between these 2 scenarios: sex with a comdom on camera and sex with total strangers under who knows what circumstances, I’m inclined to think he got infected while whoring. In either case it’s irrelevant; however he got it, it was a result of his own choices. And the whole ‘they’re just kids’ argument is condescending BS. He is a grown ass man. If you’re adult enough to decide you want to be a sex worker, you should be adult enough to protect yourself.

You bitch? better get clue before your brain-cell pop-out because all of you fall to see what’s going on here and that is. The Blame-Game by Derek-Chambers aka Cameron-Reid he has no-one to blame but him-self for his situation and predicament that he now finds him-self in.He want to blame every-one but himself that why he keep throwing stones at other peoples rather than look in the mirror and blame him-self. For all his troubles first he got mad and insulted a str8 porn blog for telling the truth and exposing the facts he work in str8-porn under the name Cameron-Reid and in Gay-porn as Derek-Chambers and that he is responsible for HIV scare.2nd he blame AIM-clinic for not giving him the correct testing results. 3rd he blame gay-porn for giving him HIV throu oral-sex which is less of a risk than anal-sex which is a higher risk with-out a condom. The only way oral-sex can give him HIV is if he has some kind of sores in his mouth or gum disease.Last but not least is he created a Rent-boy ad for escorting with-out telling potentical-clients he contracted Chlamydia. Gonorrhea, & herpes doing str8-porn work that side of the industry is saddle or riddle with those types of venereal diseases i know because i saw a video on a str8-porn site where a porn-starlet said she didn’t tell her male-porn co-stars she work with she had herpes spreading it to them.Just like Derek-Chambers didn’t James-Jamesson who he had sex with that he was infected with herpes, gonorrhea & Chlamydia either shame on him who’s the victum now so stop playing the blame-game jack-ass.

If he worked as an escourt, and also had unprotected sex with woman on the set, he could have contracted the HIV in many places. There is also a window of time from the test before the HIV becomes possible to detect. I feel sorry for anyone at 24, contracting this disease. We don’t need to blame him at all. But, one needs to calculate the risks in any sexual activity. There is almost no really safer sex with another-one can get diseases by kissing too. I hope he has a good long life.

Yep, this guy exploited himself and chances are he knew how HIV and STDs are contracted. It’s not blame the victim. He had unprotected sex and rolled the dice. He is probably angry at the industry and himself. The industry cares little about your health and it pays crap. It was a decision you chose. When you sell yourself you have people who want to fuck you and chances are you will be disguisted by them. REALLY??? It’s not the HIV, it’s the mindfuck you will have to live knowing you fucked yourself. Pick yourself up and move forward dude. Buy a couple of Tori Amos CDs.

Get over it FAGGOT . If you’re having sex with hundreds of different people per year, condom or not, you put yourself at risk of getting HIV and a host of other nasty diseases, that no one seems to want to talk about. The focus is always HIV. What about herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlyamidia, HPV. And many people don’t show symptoms until it’s too late.

Its a rent boy ad.If it was legal he would be required by law to wear prostection but unfortunaley it is anything goes with illegal rent boy ads. Look at the stats there is about 1/2 closet male performers in the film production side that offer more than handjobs. So lets be honest if he was doing rent boy ads what do you think the other male performers do? There are so many that hide the fact that they are willing to do gay-4-pay based on risk management so that they want nothing more than cash. They would risk their girlfriends lives as well. Its really quite disturbing to see gay-4-pay male pay grade differintials as well as risk factors involved. Comparitive tissues and transmission rates including. Wera a rubber and watch you ass.
