PORN THEATER PRIDE: OUTFEST TURNS UP THE HEAT

Despite coming of age with the VCR, I’ve always had a fondness for watching hardcore sex in the company of strangers. This week, Outfest, the LA-based LGBT film festival is bringing porn back to the theater.

By my count, at least nine of the screenings feature some hardcore sex, which may mean that we are approaching some sort of sexual singularity wherein the porn industry stops being the dirty uncle confined to the house during the family barbeque. Eh, who am I kidding? We’d never really want to join. That said, here’s six places we’re looking forward to pulling the old penis-in-the-popcorn trick:

LA Plays Itself (dir. Fred Halstead)
Fred Halstead’s 1972 porn about life in LA changed the way that gay men thought about sex. The hardcore feature — there’s even fisting — screened not only porno theaters and private homes but the Museum of Modern Art. After screening, no less than Salvador Dali was heard to mutter, “new information for me.” Forty years later, I don’t doubt you’ll be muttering the same thing.
Thursday, July 19. 9:45PM, Redcat. Tickets.

Jackpot (dir. Adam Baran)
Finally! We’ve been waiting for Adam Baran’s short about a boy’s quest to score a porn magazine since last summer. And hell, half of you helped fund it. So put down the laptop and flash back to those halcyon (hellish?) days when finding a bit of printed flesh meant a heart-pounding adventure. Adam’s taken LA by storm in the past few months, so expect a packed house.
Boys Shorts, Saturday July 14 11:00AM and Monday, July 16. 9:45PM. Tickets.

Bruce La Bruce Shorts
It’s Bruce LaBruce. He’s not exactly shy about sex, you know? The queer provocateur has long been explicit (going so far as to shoot commercial porn with Cazzo to finance his more frank art projects). Expect lesbian terrorists, blood-soaked furs, hot transman and an uncomfortable boner.
Friday, July 13. 7:30PM. Tickets.

I Want Your Love (dir. Travis Mathews)
For those of you who missed the packed premiere at Frameline, get ready to sweat. Director Travis Mathew’s paean to San Francisco sexuality is as tender and moving as it is hot. Yes, we’ve written about it here, here and here (to name a few), but the NakedSword-produced film is worth every column inch.
Friday, July 13, 9:45PM. Tickets.

5. Our Paradise (dir. Gael Morel)
It’s dark, gritty and French … and has possibly the hottest twink ever. Stephane Rideau stars as an aging Parisian hustler who picks up the beautiful young Angelo in the Bois du Bologne. Part hardcore love affair, part tightly-pack thriller. The plot give you pause before you go on Rentboy, but I doubt it. You’re a sick fuck.
Tuesday, July 17. 9:45PM. Tickets.

6. Taxi Zum Klo (Taxi to the Toilet) (dir. Frank Ripploh)
The Village Voice called this 1981 German hit “the first masterpiece of modern gay life.” It’s 98 minutes of real life and real sex: in public restrooms, parks and just about everywhere else in West Berlin. Like LA Plays Itself, it’s a flashback to the days when gay sex was dangerous, exciting and raw.
Saturday, July 21. 730PM. Tickets.

Of course, if you’re not some sex pervert who needs to see hardcore fucking every time you order popcorn there’s also Vito, Jeffrey Schwarz’s excellent documentary on Vito Russo and Ira Sach’s narrative Keep The Lights On (which, lack of reverse cowboy c-light penetration aside, isn’t exactly Mary Poppins) .
