HOW THE MAVERICK MEN ARE CHANGING THE GAY PORN INDUSTRY

The Maverick Men aren’t for everybody. And they’ll probably never be a Falcon or Raging Stallion or Sean Cody. But if you’re wondering what the gay porn will look like in five years, you’re probably seeing it on Maverick Men first. Five reasons why, after the jump …

1. It’s done on the cheap, but it still has character.
Most of the sex happens in the same apartment we’ve seen a thousand times, but it doesn’t look like a set — because it isn’t. These aren’t the Crate & Barrel bedrooms of Sean Cody, or the generic hotels of what used to be called ‘amateur’ sites. It’s Cole and Hunter’s own Boston apartment — and sometimes the stairwell, or the park around the corner. They film it themselves, rather than using a cameraperson, and yet you forgive the awkward camera angles because it’s authentic. They don’t pay their models, but they get excellent performances because they want to be there. Now that margins are tight, the ‘lucrative hobby’ model is one of the few viable models left for new studios.

2. There’s no story, but there’s plenty of narrative.
We all know the story — two committed tops seek out bottoms to help their sex life. You never see Cole or Hunter in costume, or trying to read lines, or doing anything (really) other than just trying to get laid. And if they fudge the spontaneity sometimes, it’s easy to forgive. Stories — at one point central to porn videos — have already dropped to near ironic status.

3. There’s no ‘type.’
While all their sleepover guests are bottoms, nothing else really unifies them — sometimes it’s a bearded hipster, other times a skinny black teen. If you’ve got a great ass, the rest doesn’t really matter to them. As a result, they’ve got some of the most diverse content on the site. While it’s doubtful subscription-based studios will move in that direction (or should), the aggregators — think NakedSword’s Netflix model — will succeed based on breadth of content.

4. It doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling.
They’re everywhere — Twitter, Vine, Facebook, you name it. I mean, sometimes it’s a little much. Still, they bring you into the process in a way that would have been unfathomable ten years ago, thanks to social media — from picking the guys to editing the videos to pumping gas (sexily). Lots of porn stars tweet, but few really involve you the way that Maverick Men do. It’s fitting that YouTube star Chris Crocker chose to give it up on camera for them first.

5. They love what they do.
Maverick Men started as a free XTube account. And while they can now make a living roaming the country hunting for cherry, they seem more than happy to give it away. In fact, you can easily get off just looking at previews on their blog. And if you keep overhead low, you can continue doing it forever.

Will the porn industry morph into a thousand Mavericks? Probably not. The Maverick Men’s advantage is also their Achille’s Heel — what an audience tends to pay for is consistency. The young, muscled and smooth boys of Bel Ami are a great example of a site that knows its market and is still thriving. Not everyone has the Maverick’s catholic sexual appetite.

And who knows how long Cole and Hunter’s enthusiasm will last — something once interesting might at some future point become more of a chore. (Staghomme started out with a similar conceit as Maverick, but has morphed much more of a business once Damien and Francesco broke up.) But what you will see and have seen are more established businesses being influenced by their success — think NakedSword’s recent Porn Star Sex Tapes series, or Cockyboy’s Austin Wilde/Anthony Romero sex documentary. But while it lasts, it’s pretty fucking amazing. And pretty amazing fucking.

These guys are GAY, natural looking and voracious lovers who obviously love gay sex. And they do it bareback. Can’t think of any other studio, mainstream or not, that offers all that.

It is. It is for me and apparently for the majority of gay porn watchers judging from the direction the market has been taking. I don’t do it in my personal life, in case you’re wondering. But I LOVE it in my porn, and I’m glad I have so many options today. Peace :)

Do they test their randoms before these quick scenes?!!

You can check out their testing protocol here. Basically, those “spontaneous” scenes are actually pretty planned out. According to Cole and Hunter, they test and talk and test for at least a month before hand.

Well I guess they might now, but who knows what went on in the old xtube days. I wouldn’t set too much store by it being just as they proclaim now.

Their scenes are not as spontaneous as they appear. They are staged for your amusement.

I think barebacking can be done in a responsible manner, so no problem there. Still, I honestly hope that we still have some of the traditional studio type porn left in 5 years. This site has its charms, but so does watching almost perfect men with good lighting and production values.

I really don’t understand how the old studios are still around. Do lots of people actually still buy DVDs from them? I mean, come on, their stuff is so staged and phony, and yes, the sex basically sucks. How many times can you watch someone jack off on someone’s chest? I think they made a big mistake going with strict condom use instead of testing. Basically, it was to keep HIV positive performers working, not to protect models’ health. Now, the whole system seems to be breaking down, and the indies on the web are where it’s at.

Their testing standards are actually some of the most stringent in the business. Many other bareback studios feature Poz men who simply don’t disclose their status except to the studio staff. I’ve spoken with Cole several times about it (he wanted to have me in a few scenes), and they’ve yet to make an exception with the HIV screening. This actually works both ways, since many guys who’d otherwise throw themselves on the bed of the Boston apartment [but have no idea about their status] more often than not shy away from putting others at risk. I think it makes the most sense, and since HIV / STI testing is as accessible as it is, even if they didn’t hold themselves up to their own standards, there’d be no excuse.

I honestly don’t buy that they don’t pay all their performers, considering that they’ve had several notorious gay-for-PAY guys in their videos (Carter Jacobs, Benny G). While there is something attractive about the Mavericks, they often come off as sleazy in their on-screen personas. I admire their success and ability to market their product, but as you said above, it’s not for everybody, and that includes me.

Maverick Men videos have also never been hot to me because of their shoddy hand-held camerawork, often obscuring hot details that better cameramen would capture, and lack of editing. I firmly believe successful gay porn happens in the editing. Ask Andrew Rosen. Technical specs, even in amateur or pro/am stuff, are important!

      No NO NO
Successful gay porn is when you have as little editing as possible and lots of camera movement. The whole point of porn is that you think you are there in the room with the performers, editing ruins this. Editing is for fiction, porn should be as real as possible

What I love best about Maverick Men is that it’s the most realistic porn I’ve found, besides digging for gold on youporn.

That they talk about chatting back and forth with the bottoms and even mention getting tested before the scenes makes me feel like I’m looking into a real relationship and real sex. Most of the times, I’m not even looking at the bottoms, so I don’t mind the inconsistencies. Hunter does it for me every time and the more videos I can find of him bottoming for Cole, the happier I will be.

Speaking of inconsistencies, is no one going to mention that there isn’t a #4??

I can’t believe you were the first one that caught that. I’d missed a ” in the code somewhere and it sandwiched two segments together. Thanks for catching it.

I think the vids are good. What I do not understand is why all the models do not get paid. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY WOULD THE MODELS RISK BEING FILM AN NOT GETTING PAID. SOME ARE JUST 18 YRS OLD AN IF THEY LIVE WITH THEIR PARENTS,THEY COULD BE PUT OUT OF THEIR HOME AN COULD RISK GETTING FIRED FROM THIER JOBS.I THINK ALL PORN WORKING SHOULD MAKE MONEY. I COULD UNBERSTAND NOT GETTING PAID IF THE VIDS WAS JUST FOR COLE AN HUNTER PRIVATE VIEWING,BUT WHEN YOU POST THE VIDS ON A PAID SITE IT ONLY SEEMS RIGHT THAT ALL INVOLVED IN THE VIDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO BENEFIT FROM THE SALES AN INCOME THAT COMES FROM FANS THAT PAY TO WATCH.I WONDER IF COLE AN HUNTER DO NOT PAID THEM DO ON THE HUNT PAY THEM.TO ME I DO NOT SEE HOW IT WHO BE LEGAL TO POST VIDS AN MAKE MONEY AN NOT PAY. IT SEEMS LIKE THAT WOULD CREATE A UNHEALTHY WORK PLACE. BECAUSE WHEN PEOPLE GO TO WORK THEY WOULD NOT BE OKAY IF ONLY BOSS GET PAID AN THE EMPLOYEE DO NOT GET AN CHECK.HOW COULD THAT BE RIGHT.IF COLE AN HUNTER READ THIS PLEASE KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU I AM JUST TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHY WOULD YOU NOT PAY THE MODELS WHEN YOU GUYS ARE MAKING MONEY OFF ALL OF THE VIDS THAT ARE POST.
