IS BONDAGE THE NEW BONDAGE?

Gay Bondage on Cockyboys

Gay porn isn’t much different than any cultural tastes: it trends in waves. And bondage is looking like the salted caramel of 2013. But it’s not your daddy’s bondage.

There was a time when if you wanted gay bondage or BDSM, your choices were largely limited to basement productions of Tom “Ropes” McGurk. Part of this — justified or not — was concern over distribution. I remember shooting a scene for the gay porn soap opera Wet Palms and being told that one guy couldn’t pin down the other, because it might be construed as a crime. Well, either society’s gotten more liberal, or porn’s gotten over that particular delusion. Because everyone’s tying up everyone these days.

Bound Jocks is emblematic of the new breed of gay bondage, and in some ways the pioneer. For the past few years, they’ve been taking muscle jocks and roping them bright colors against an unintimidating white background. Kink Men’s Men On Edge can be more hardcore, but they, too, have been opening up to less intimidating shoots: sets in Star Wars themes and muscle jocks like Marc Dylan.

Somewhere in between the two is Hot House. The legendary gay porn studio is no stranger to excellent bondage, but they’ve been getting more and more inventive with the restraints, and it’s paying off big time. Their Sektor 9 was one of the best movies of last year, but it’s the current release, The Dom, that’s really got me sweating.

There are others. Staghomme has done plenty a few abduction scenes, and Titan continues to lead the pack in terms of quality (though they tend to be heavier on the discipline than the bondage). The real tipping point for the mass market, though, might be Cockyboy’s recent shoot with Anthony Romero. It’s bondage so light it might float away, but the scene is sure to start opening some eyes, for both consumers and producers.

I’m sure I’m missing some — hit me up if you’ve seen any notable gay bondage that I’ve missed. In the meantime:
