Blake Riley: The Gay Porn Blog Interview

I don’t think people who leave caustic, anonymous comments on blogs necessarily need to be acknowledged, let alone responded to. But something strange happened in the comment thread for some pictures I posted on Chi Chi’s upcoming bi flick Shifting Gears. A lot of people expressed their excitement for the movie, but there was an undercurrent of dissent. and much of it was focused on Blake Riley, for reasons I’m having a hard time understanding.

Not that Blake needs me to come to his defense but I do need to clear one thing up: It was me who called him “straight for pay” (for the purposes of an attention-grabbing headline and nothing more) That term never appeared in any of Chanel 1’s marketing material for that movie. Blake’s never claimed to be bisexual or gay-for-pay (or “straight for pay” for that matter).

I will say that — in addition to having an ass like two ripe melons and being one of the most-handsome performers working today — Blake also happens to be an incredibly nice person. I interviewed him a few months ago and also got to spend some time with him on the set of the NakedSword Knockout shoot, and I was really taken by this completely down-to-earth charmer.

As the first dual exclusive for a studio (Channel 1) and a website (RandyBlue), Blake’s rise — culminating in winning 2008 GayVN Best Newcomer — was meteoric. But did you know he was living on the streets when he started doing porn and that he credits porn with saving him? Or that he’s studying to be a chiropractor? Get to know more about Blake Riley in our interview, after the jump.

How’d you get discovered?
Randy Blue found me on MySpace about 3 years ago. We emailed for a while. It ended up taking me about a year to decide to start working for him.

What were your reservations?

I was dating someone who was against it. After we broke up I decided to go for it.

You’d hit somewhat of a rocky patch at that time, too.
I had moved to Dallas to live with my cousin. I got kicked out and ended up on the streets for a few weeks. I got back in contact with (Randy Blue) and he flew me out and got my life back in order and my shit together. I look at like porn kind of saved me. you don’t hear that a lot. I did it out of desperation at first but then decided I might as well make myself as big as I possibly can be.

blake_riley_gay-porn-4.jpg

How did the dual exclusive thing happen? What’s it like?
It’s exhausting! (laughs) I don’t know how it all works out … they have it worked out in contract that I can work for both companies. It ends up working out really well. Apparently I was the first ever in porn to do this.

What’s your relationship like with Randy and Chi Chi?
Randy’s a great influence as far as staying in school and stuff … he’s like a dad. And Chi Chi is like a mom… two parents in the porn industry. (laughs)

What’s the difference between shooting for them?
What we do with Randy in a few hours takes 2 days with a studio. Either way it’s not easy it’s work.

Now are the guys you date more accepting?
My last relationship with a porn star was with Christian Owen. There’s not much of a difference actually — it ends up being the same. Other porn stars tend to get jealous because they think you have a connection with a co-star.

Have you ever had a connection with a co-star?
Kinda as much as you can get one for someone you’ve just met. I’ve made a lot of great friends out of it but as far as relationships not really.

blake_riley_gay-porn_1.jpg

What’s your non-porn life like?
I consider myself a normal person. I don’t go out that often. I try to lead a normal life and go to school. A lot of people in the industry get so wrapped up in it they loose perspective. I know that it’ll come to an end one day and a lot of people don’t see that side of it.

How did you come up with your porn name?
My middle name is Blake and I came up with Riley because I want my son’s name to be Colton Riley.

Does your family know?
On my dad’s side everybody knows excpt for my dad and grandmother. They’re cool with it — as long as I stay safe. My mom’s side nobody knows that I know of. I grew up Southern Baptist. They’d be very against it.

blake_riley_gayporn-5.jpg

Are you different sexually on-camera vs. off?
On-camera I’m dirtier — I get to do a lot of things that I’d never get into off camera — like in leather movies like Link. I get my fill of it on camera and I don’t want to try it off camera. I’m pretty tame. I don’t care to experiment off camera.

Top/Bottom/Versatile?
In videos I’m more of a bottom. In personal life, I’m compeletly versatile.

What’s your biggest turn on?
Love to eat ass. That’s my favorite all time thing to do.

Biggest turn off?
Biting and spit. When people try to do that it annoys me.

Best way for fans to get in touch with you?
Through Myspace.

Tell us something you’ve never told anyone.
I’m pretty muchan open book. I don’t keep any secrets. I don’t keep secrets, I’m against that.

Here’s a secret: Blake used to be a cheerleader! We’ll tumble for him any day.

I think you are misunderstanding the blogs. No one has an issue with Blake Riley. When just about every plot has been tried in gay porn, Chi Chi took gay guys and made them “straight for pay.” Of course you have to understand how this is insulting to many of us gay guys. I have no problem or issue with this video but I do understand why gay guys think this is dumb and silly. Is not the purpose of a bi sexual video to have bi sexual performers? It does seem a tad strange to make gay guys have sex with women to sell a video. It is blogs like yours that spend too much time kissing the ass of Chi Chi and Blake Riley instead of reporting on serious gay porn.

You guys are never happy now admit it if they had gotten a Bisexual performer how many gay guys would be bitching about him really being gay and him being honest with himself? If they had they wouldn’t hear the end of that either because most gay guys don’t think Bisexuals exist. Which they do by the way I’ve dated many but when a gay performer says he’s gay for pay or Bi or straight you guys give them shit about them really being gay. Now admit thats the real reason your mad.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve heard a lot of people say that Blake is a very sweet guy, and it sounds like he’s been through some tough times. I hope my comments on the “Shifting Gears” thread didn’t come across as caustic or judgmental because that’s not how I intended them. Despite the controversy, I truly do wish Blake the very best in everything he pursues. :-)

I have the pleasure of knowing Blake on and off camera. On camera, he is electrifying as a performer. Off camera, one of the sweetest people you’d ever want to meet. He always has a smile and is outgoing like crazy. I understand if gay men were offended by the marketing of “Shifting Gears”, but to throw mud at Blake’s face, I found confusing. Models work very hard to bring fantasy on film, sometimes doing things for the first time on film. He has shown a seriousness and discipline to the craft. For him to be a gay man and have a hard-on on film with a woman is now easy task. He did his job and that’s all you can ask for. I am very proud of his success and even more happy that its happening to an awesome person. Thanks for posting this new entry Jack and giving people a taste of the Blake Riley that I know.

I still have lost a lost of respect for Blake and Chi Chi, not because he is bisexual, but because of the way he became involved in the marketing of this film, which is offensive and fundamentally homophobic.

I (as I imagine a lot of men) have simply “gone off him” and don’t find him hot anymore. I wish him well in personal life, put as a performer, I have zero interest in him and will not watch any scene which he is performing in. I honestly think this has a put a big dent in his popularity and sadly, I doubt he will ever be as popular or the star he was prior to this bisexual film and it’s regrettable marketing.

Wolf, in your post did you mean to say “no easy task” or “now an easy task”? Sorry to be an editor here, but typos that change the meaning of a sentence drive me crazy! ;-)

And thank you for acknowledging that it’s the MARKETING of the film that has offended so many gay viewers. I believe you’re the first person from the “other side” to finally acknowledge that, and I appreciate it. I agree with you that making Blake the scapegoat of the whole thing isn’t fair. Regardless of orientations, I appreciate all the hard work you guys do.

    Say what you will…
He’s not a mess, he’s not a vapid self centered ego maniac, and he doesn’t beat up old ladies… so in my book he gives us porn performers a good name… even if he did switch hit once for Chi Chi.
    Love ya kiddo.

Well, neon, there is actually nothing in that interview which confirms he is gay.
He never once mentions his sexuality, only reviling he has been in a relationship
with Chris Owen and “someone” else who’s gender is left ambiguous. I personally don’t think he is gay, bi yes, gay no.

Also, does anyone not think it’s a coincidence that these pictures came out the very same time as Falcon released pictures of Zeb’s first gay sex scene. ChiChi is no fool, NO ONE knows the industry better than her, of course she knew the marketing of this film would
provoke this reaction, of course she knew headlining “Blake goes straight”
    would cause a big reaction.

So she has successful stole Falcons’ thunder, she may have thrown Blake’s career to
the lions, but she and her productions are still on everyone’s lips.
Sorry, as I said, I’m sure Blake is a very nice guy and I wish him well, but I don’t
believe he will be the star he was, almost every forum that this is discussed on, most of the posts are
very negative and directed at Blake. And the porn industry is very fickle where, stars are disposable, which is totally horrendous, but unfortunately true.

As for, ChiChi you can bet she has some hot exclusive guy waiting in the wings to take Blake’s place.

Well you can think Blake is “bi” all you want. He never had intercourse with a woman before the video shoot, and only had a blowjob from a woman in his past. How does this equate being bi? You’re not “bi” if you only fuck women for pay (same applies to any guy who only has sex with men for pay; they’re not bi).

Blake also used to date Sebastian Rivers and when Blake has appeared on Randy Blue web shows he has always said he’s gay (in magazine interviews as well). So I doubt very much that he is bi (if he was why has it taken so long for him to have sex with a woman?).

I wasn’t happy to read that Blake had done this bi movie but at the end of the day I will never see it and it doesn’t change Blake as a person (as far as I’m concerned).

I think the comments here were kind compared to what I read on Datalounge.Com and Aktol.Com.

However I found the interview frustrating. I really do not care what a guy does, but I do not like coyness and the ambiguity; it is a turn-off. Is he gay or is he straight or is he bi-sexual? Just say it already.

As a gay man I love watching guys like James Deen or Manuel Ferrarra perform in a film, they are straight and real and I find them almost as hot as gay stars like Arpad Miklos and Michael Lucas. They are who they are and that’s it. But watching Blake Riley in the Chi-Chi’s very disappointing new film Unknown, after having read this interview, I just could not get past the underlying homophobia almost enhanced by the unanswered questions of the above interview.

I can appreciate Blake is a sweet guy and I totally wish the guy cool honey, but I am not going to apologize for being pissed off by the promotion of this film, it bugs me and is degrading to gay men. It’s totally whack.

Besides he has ruined the “fantasy” for most guys, the bisexual porn audience is not huge and most guys just didn’t want to see or hear about him screwing three women. I wonder was there any gay porn on set? Will Blake be looking over his shoulder at a gay porn film playing in the background? I don’t think so, I doubt he needed any help being turned on other than his own attraction for these women, so COME ON!!! He is not gay, so don’t be so dense.

He has lost fans, but he made the decision to do this and play with his popularity and his image, it doesn’t look like it’s going work out and was a total howler, guys were offended by it and he lost a lot oh his attraction and appeal and now he and Larry have to deal with all this crap he invited onto his doorstep.

Just one more thing, isn’t it weird how it’s only guys who have some kinda attraction to men who have problems with “labels”, you don’t see any straight guy having a problem with being labelled straight.

    Interesting debate here!

for me the “4 pay” is a slight turn off. I’d rather watch real bisexuals (and there are some in that movie it seems) I am not a fan of gay for pay so straight for pay probably won’t work either.

I think sexuality today is more blurry and less defined than it was before, and lots of young guys are just happy to share the love with anyone, male or female, so why not play with that?

  28. MNF August 29th, 2008 at 4:49 AM

I just noticed that Jack added a paragraph to his introduction to clarify something. I don’t believe it was there earlier, and I only saw it this morning. (See second paragraph.)

“It was me who called him ‘straight for pay’ (for the purposes of an attention-grabbing headline and nothing more) That term never appeared in any of Chanel 1’s marketing material for that movie. Blake’s never claimed to be bisexual or gay-for-pay (or ‘straight for pay’ for that matter).”

Aha, so this is all YOUR fault, Jack! Fifty lashes with a wet noodle! ;-) (Hey, maybe you should copyright the term and make some money off of it, eh?)

Anyway, this shows how easily things can get misconstrued. Channel1 does does say that Blake and Cameron “go straight,” but it never used the term “straight for pay.” I believe it was first mentioned here and has been picked up on numerous sites since then.

As for ATKOL (which is where I learned about the movie in the first place), the posters there can be vicious, but their posts on this topic are mild compared to what I have read here. As for datalounge…yuck, let’s not even go there. Five minutes on there and I felt like I needed to wash out my eyes. It’s one thing to debate and talk about a topic; it’s another to be nasty just for nastiness sake.

My guess that Blake is probably bi but leans more to men. Sure, bisexuals enjoy both sexes but not all of them enjoy both sexes equally or 50/50. Some bi’s like men more, and some of them like women more. And many of them either pick the label “Gay” or “Straight” according to what sex they like more, to fit in better with society. That being said, I think there are TONS more bisexuals in the world than we like to think. But I’m not saying there are no 100% pure gay or straight people out there. They exist too.

  31. anon314159 August 29th, 2008 at 10:07 AM

All of this supposed “controversy” is so silly. If you don’t feel like watching a movie with chicks, don’t watch this particular movie. It’s no reason to boycott the performer just because he did the movie, may have enjoyed it, may be bisexual, etc.

I keep reading these comments about how Blake has “ruined the fantasy”. That sounds EXACTLY like those irritating bachelorettes who get their panties in a wad if a boy happens to be in the audience at a male strip show. (“Oh no! Maybe the performers are gay too! Now I just can’t enjoy watching those amazingly chiseled bodies!”)

In reality, people need to get past the false dichotomy of sexuality that was erected in the past century or so. Humans are not exclusively heterosexual or homosexual, and there is no reason to pretend that they are. Studies have shown that most people are capable of sexual attraction to either sex. I myself have a friend who is extremely self-identified as gay — and you know what? Even he fell for and fucked a girl, and really enjoyed it, and the two dated for several months.

  32. MNF August 29th, 2008 at 3:05 PM

anon314159, your argument about the “false dichotomy of sexuality” and your claim that “humans are not exclusively heterosexual or homosexual” is the same thing bisexuals have been saying for years–i.e., ALL people are bisexual–and that’s just simply not accurate. Being CAPABLE of sexual attraction to either sex isn’t the same as actually FEELING sexual attraction to either sex. I’m a human being, and I’m gay, not bisexual. I do not feel a sexual attraction to women, only to men. And your friend who self-identified as gay? Well, he’s a bisexual. He may have thought of himself as gay, and he may lean much more towards men; but if he enjoyed himself that much and pursued a relationship with this woman on a romantic level, then he’s bi.

    Just my 2 cents…or more.

There’s nothing wrong with being a bisexual but don’t go around fooling people ….. you just make yourself look like a complete a$$hole…
I’m complete gay and have no sexual attraction to woman !

and i have no problem with Blake being bisexual but don’t try to feed us that shit that he still consider himself gay ! please ! celebrate what you are ! I can understand no one likes labels but in the end , we can’t realy escape them ! I’m gay and i think that label fits me perfectly !

It amazes me how so many gay men jump all over men who experiment or declare themselves bisexual. A large percentage of gay men dated and even slept with women growing up because they were trying to understand their sexual selves and it was expected of them because their families and religion were anti-gay. Only recently are more younger men able to be more open with less scrutiny. So, if a young guy wants to explore, I say let him. Everyone’s sexuality is not cut and dry and those who believe that are just closed minded.

How the fuck has anything to do with gay porn? The fact is it’s been done 100 times before and fact that is NOT GAY porn and has nothing to do with gay porn, it is BI not Gay, she has not done anything knew regarding gay porn. Stop being dense guys.

She has marketed it offensively with strong anti-gay concept: “gay man” has straight sex and in now “converted”. That is gross and insulting and it totally IS how it’s being marketed, all just to get attention.

Blake Riley is bi. he was before this film and is after it, which is totally cool, but he went along with the stupid, insulting marketing and spat in the face of his gay fans. So I have lost respect for him and don’t find him hot anymore no matter how “sweet” he is.

OMG. I hope that this blog just has an unusually high concentration of hateful gay readers, as opposed to it truly representing the population as a whole. Because I still can’t see why a bisexual porn flick starring a gay porn star would offend all of these people and instigate them to be as intolerant and bigoted as Fred Phelps. Guess what? Being a homo is just about preferring a same-sex partner. There is no rule or requirement stating he must also be completely turned off by the opposite sex. And even if a gay guy is a Kinsey 6, he may still find the idea of a hot gay dude (or ugly one for that matter) fucking a chick (or a tranny or a hermaphrodite for that matter)…he may still find this intriguing. And when he watches he may find it worth jacking off to. End of story. If you are grossed out by it, go buy one of the other ten million men-only porn flicks. This one little film was not produced with you in mind.

i doesn’t really matter “gay porn” has been ruined by “gay-for-pay” anyway and us gay men are to blame, sitting around dreaming of straight men we can’t have is the reason why this “gay-for-pay” “they’re straight but most of all broke” crap has taken over anyway we’ll probably never see real gay men in porn again. we’ll continue to see closet cases or men who use both the industry and this culture to get what they can get only to call us “fags” in public. we will continue to see men like wolf hudson.

Interestingly enough, Blake is no longer listed as gay on his Wiki page as he previously was, or on his ms profile.

Guess he really has switched. Another one bites the dust, well maybe he can get a girlfriend have little “Colton” and lead a “normal” life now. Oh ChiChi, you do such good work saving men from a dirty life of queerdom.

Last time I watch anything with him in it.

For some reason Wikipedia no longer lists the sexual orientation of any porn stars. On Blake’s Myspace profile he still has his orientation indicated as gay, but you have to be logged in to see it.

    MNF & Legion:

I think I may have been unclear.

My point is that society has foisted upon us this notion that a person must either be straight or gay, or else some very particularized notion of a bisexual. This belief that we should classify ourselves by how we fuck, and elevate that classification to the level of self-identity, is a recent development. Societies thousands of years before us had sex between men and men, men and women, and women and women. Some of them were freer than others, but in any event sexual conduct was seen as conduct and not an immutable personal characteristic.

I believe most people, yes, would find they can enjoy either sex if only they didn’t believe their identities to be threatened by it. We all know a straight guy who has plenty of curiosity and would enjoy having a cock up his ass if he felt free to try it. Likewise, in my experience, a LOT of gay guys could enjoy sex with a woman. But they’d never consider it, because they feel it threatens their gay identity, which is understandable because it’s not easy to bring oneself to identify as gay in the first place.

As for my friend, you can call him what you want. For all practical purposes, he’s gay — he has preferred men in all circumstances but one. But he was secure enough in himself to keep an open mind. He never felt it necessary to say, “ew! a pussy!” (which is a pretty ridiculous sentiment when you think about it). For that I admire him.

“I believe most people, yes, would find they can enjoy either sex if only they didn’t believe their identities to be threatened by it.”

The reason I don’t have sex with a woman is not because I FEEL THREATENED for my identity – the reason is because I don’t get turn on physically or mentally by a pussy or a woman’s body ! and If a man gets turns on by either and can get a hard on for either – I see that that person as a bisexual – but if they want to deny it , they can call themselves “sexual” , the new term for bisexuals these days …nothing wrong with that …. but to say gays are threatened by pussy … its like saying … “Hey you gays, go try a pussy and believe me, you will enjoy it “…..
but hey , if that worked for you.. be happy … but don’t assume that gays will be more happy if they just start enjoying sex with both sexes !

anon314159, in today’s youth culture the term “gay” is such an insult, it is now used as an everyday word by kids to call something stupid or lame.

The fact is among young people being gay is a bigger taboo than it was 10 years ago, kids now are much more anti-gay. I think it has rubbed off on younger gay men, since most now refuse to “label” themselves out of shame, becuase the word gay carries such degradation. The fact that 80% of gay porn is made up of straight and bi men reflects this. There is a genuine internalized homophobia in the majority of gay men, every year a new survey will come out which shows significant drops in men who identify as gay, I read as little as 4%, and that is not from the anti-gay surveys which can go as low as 1.1%.

The % of men who call themselves straight isn’t dipping. What are you asking for that gay men, Kinsey 6, to become extinct? That gay men stop identifying as gay, do you really think that will help gay rights? Are you asking for the population to be made up of straight and bisexual people.

Being gay is the ONLY minority in the world that it is perfectly OK to degrade, intimidate with violence, practice homophobic behaviour and humiliate with no consequences. Where the President of the US can stand up and demand the practice of second-class citizenship among gay men, where a 14 year kid can have his head blown off and where the killer becomes the victim, because he shouldn’t have had to deal with seeing a gay kid a school.

Being gay means we are at the bottom of the barrel, the fact the vast majority of bi guys will marry, have kids and lead a “normal straight” life, and in truth most gay men have been hurt by bi guys during this process mean a lot of gay men are mistrustful and suspicious of bisexual men as they “take the easy road”

I have been a gay rights activist for a long time, I have gone to conventions all over and I have met gay men and women, straight and bi women, I still have yet to meet a bisexual man who fights for gay rights.

    Dear !,

I understand where you’re coming from, and I respect your desire to secure rights for marginalized groups.

    However, two points:

    (1) I don’t personally believe that the best way to secure equal rights for everyone is to divide ourselves up into artificial classifications, and then parade around for “Group X” rights.

In fact, I believe the fact that we now define “Group X” is the result of fear and hate that emerged within the past century. (Think of the “one drop” principle applied to “blacks” in the post-slavery era. Ridiculous, right? It’s exactly how mainstream society conceptualizes human sexuality now!)

By embracing labels, I believe we actually perpetuate fear and discrimination. The much better approach would be to work to a society in which sexual practices are not seen as a defining element of one’s self, but rather a healthy, if inconsequential, set of activities one enjoys. In a society where who you fuck defines you, there can never be genuine equality.

    (2) I detect animosity toward bi men in your post. I don’t have statistical data one way or another as to whether most bi guys end up in traditional marriages. But, what does it matter? And what do you mean, “most gay men have been hurt by bi guys…”?

I can assure you that most gay men have been hurt much more frequently by other gay men… cheating, judging, not disclosing STIs, etc.

Finally, your suggestion that bi men who end up with women “take the easy road” is insulting, and a reflection of the type of discrimination you claim to fight. There is nothing easy about telling a potential girlfriend/wife that you like men. There is nothing easy about having other men say snide, catty things to you because you live outside the boundaries of their “club.”

If you’re going to promote labels and simultaneously claim that you want to end discrimination, please at least try to avoid disparaging other labels.

    anon314159,

I understand your points, but once again, there is a difference between being CAPABLE of enjoying sex with a woman and feeling a genuine sexual ATTRACTION towards a woman. I’ve never used a fleshlight, but from what I understand it feels fantastic. However, I suspect most guys who use fleshlights aren’t sexually attracted to them; they just enjoy the way it makes their penises feel. In the same way, I’m sure the physical sensations of fucking a woman are pleasurable too; but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the guy is sexually attracted to the woman he’s fucking.

You talk about societal trends, but do you realize you yourself are actually foisting a current societal trend? It’s the one that says “blur all the edges, don’t label yourself, just be open minded.” I personally think it’s even harder for a man to come out as gay in today’s society because he will likely be told that he shouldn’t “label himself” and will be undoubtedly bombarded with the dreaded questions: “So, you’ve NEVER been turned on by woman? How ’bout that one over there? Don’t you think she’s hot? Don’t you think you could fuck her and enjoy it?” Back when I first started coming out, one friend of mine in particular constantly harped on me about being with a woman. I got so damn tired of it, and finally she did let it go, but it ultimately affected our friendship. Is that really acceptance? Someone tells you he’s gay and then you start trying to convince him to fuck a woman anyway? How twisted is that?

For all its talk of inclusiveness, current society is extremely focused on FEMALE sex appeal, constantly sending out the same message to everyone in one way or another: “See this chick right here? She’s hot, and you should be attracted to her!” The same message goes out to gay men.

And you “admire” your friend for fucking a woman and enjoying it? Tell me something: Do you also admire your gay friends who say they have absolutely NO interest in having sex with a woman, or do you tell them they need to be more “open minded” and give it a try? Who’s foisting a label on whom now? Your friend can call himself gay till the cows come home, but actions speak louder than words. He is a bisexual. He may be a Kinsey 5.5, but he’s still a bisexual man who ultimately prefers men over women.

Here’s an interesting fact: Wolf Hudson talked about how proud he was of Blake for his hetero performance and for “liking it.” You seem to feel the same way about your friend who had a relationship with a woman. Kurt Lockwood, a hetero porn star, just recently did a bisexual scene where he had sex with a man for the first time on camera. Interestingly enough, I can find no quotes of anyone saying how proud they are of him or how they admire him for doing it. And strangely enough, he wasn’t quoted as saying, “Hey, I fucked a guy, and I liked it!” Why? Because there is a stigma when a man fucks a man. When a man fucks a woman, society cheers him on. And when a gay man fucks a woman, society breathes a sigh of relief and says, “Yes! I knew he would like it if he just gave it a try”…which, in my estimation, is exactly what you’re doing.

I have always been secure in my homosexual identity. I don’t freak out at the sight of a vagina, and I don’t cringe at the idea of having sex with a woman. But women simply don’t turn me on, and I don’t feel like I’m limiting myself in any way whatsoever by NOT having sex with a woman. You actually come across like you’re threatened by the idea that a man can actually be fulfilled having a gay sex life and not having any desire to be with a woman. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bisexuality or bisexuals; they are amazing, beautiful people. But I DO have a problem with a bisexual (or any other orientation, for that matter) who doesn’t have enough respect for me to accept the fact that I simply do NOT have any sexual interest in women.

I went through a rough road to get to the point of accepting myself as gay man–had to deal with the Bible, my own low self-esteem, the fear of rejection, losing friends, etc. I can’t help but think to myself, gee, if I had only waited till 2008, I could have come out as…nothing…just “open minded,” “flexible,” “whatever.” Damn, and I did it the hard way!

One more thing: You state, “By embracing labels, I believe we actually perpetuate fear and discrimination.” I disagree. On the contrary, I think that by embracing labels–or perhaps a better way to say it is self-identifying–we are letting other people know where we’re coming from and giving them a basis to start really getting to know us as individual human beings. They might still reject us for whatever label we use to describe ourselves, but if they do, then they’re not the kind of people we need in our lives anyway.

Think about the rainbow, which is often used as a symbol for GLBT people because of its diversity. What makes a rainbow beautiful? The fact that it contains different colors next to one another. Sure, the edges may blur a bit, but there are still distinct colors–red, green, yellow, etc. Now imagine taking that rainbow and, instead of having distinct colors, blending them all together into one big undefinable color. There’s no more red, no more green, no more yellow…. Is that REALLY as beautiful as the original rainbow, in all its colorful diversity? Each of us–straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender–we are all a distinct and beautiful color. Imagine the red trying to convince the green to be red and the green trying to convince the yellow to be green. Anyway, I think you get my point.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my rant for the day…possibly even the rest of the week! ;-)

    MNF,

You’ve made some good points. While I don’t agree with many of them, I do respect your thoughtfulness and conviction.

Let me first address the distinction between enjoying a physical sensation and feeling an attraction to a person. When I said that most people can enjoy either sex, I was referring to attraction, not physical pleasure. Of course it feels good to have your penis rubbed, no matter who or what is doing it. :-)

I have known a lot of people, of all orientations, and have known them closely enough for them to let their guards down with me. I’m very interested in psychology and sociology, so I tend to ask a lot of questions, observe my friends in various situations, etc. So far, I have simply never known a purely homosexual or heterosexual person. Since I tend to attract a wide range of personality types, my experience suggests that bisexuality is quite a bit more common than anyone gives it credit for. Which, incidentally, is bolstered by both scientific research and historical data.

I don’t mean to suggest that there are no purely homosexual or heterosexual people. Rather, my suggestion is that a great many people reflexively limit themselves to one or the other because they’ve adopted a certain symbolic belief about themselves. “I’m an X.” “I’m a Y.” That would be nothing more than a quirk of fate if only it didn’t come attached with all sorts of stereotypes, preconceptions, and social censure — but it does. :-(

You claim that I am “foisting a social trend,” but I think you are dead wrong. First, I don’t have the power to foist anything on society. Second, the premise that humans are sexually fluid can hardly be called a trend — unless by “trend” you mean a documented phenomenon that dates back to the beginning of recorded history! In truth, labeling is something that emerged quite recently by historical standards. It promotes camaraderie, but also facilitates harsh discrimination. Interestingly, I have observed that in countries in which homosexual activity is not taboo, the prevalence of labeling and identity politics is quite diminished. Imagine that!

As for my friend, I respect him because he was brave and open-minded. He had an impulse that many other men would have squelched without thinking — “I’m gay, of course I’m not interested in HER!”. I am not proud of him because he did a girl; I’m proud of him because he didn’t let social pressure and 16 years of gay identity keep him from living in the moment. (By “social pressure” I am referring to his SF gay social circle. They were very harshly judgmental of him. Imagine that!!)

I would never try to coerce a gay friend into having sex with a girl… but as I said before, I’ve not really had a close “gay” friend yet who didn’t admit to having some attraction to women. Ditto for “straight” friends.

(Try asking one to consider a scenario in which he’s stuck in an elevator with a total stud whom he’ll never meet again. If guaranteed no one would ever know, would he (hypothetically) consider a flirtatious touch, or even a small kiss? I’ve actually seen guys deepen their breath and lick their lips pondering this question!)

Interestingly, you’ve made reference to the Kinsey scale a couple of times now, most notably to suggest that a 5.5 is gay-leaning but bisexual. How likely do you think it is that most people would be either 6.0 or 0.0? Doesn’t that seem a bit improbable, given the fact that most human traits tend to be normally distributed (i.e., a bell curve)? Just food for thought.

None of this is meant to suggest that YOU like women. Please, relax; I am not trying to recruit new bisexuals. What I AM trying to do is to stimulate thought and highlight a different way of thinking.

Threads like this one make me so sad because they reveal just how insular we become when we identify strongly with narrow labels. This is true not just of sexual orientation, by the way, but of ethnicity, class, profession, etc.

Why are gay men so angered when another gay man experiments with a girl? Why do they feel so threatened? Quite frankly, I believe it’s because they seek validation for their own lifestyle in the wrong place. Rather than feeling confident that it’s OK to date/marry/fuck men because it’s what they want to do, they try to justify it by citing some form of predetermination. “I was BORN gay! I had no choice! I ONLY like men! Therefore, this is right because it’s WHO I AM.” Well, if that’s the only thing that allows you to respect your own sexuality, of *course* you’ll feel threatened and angered when people start coloring outside the lines you’re clinging to.

To make all of this much shorter: I believe that identity politics — including the premise that one is either gay or straight (and is born that way) — have been useful in securing some limited rights for people who live GLBT lifestyles. But as those lifestyles are becoming more approachable in mainstream society, I believe we’re seeing the weakness of our initial strategy. We’re seeing that rigid classifications promote segregation, resentment, and infighting among the very same people who should be open-minded, tolerant, and… united!

    MNF,

There is one more thing I wanted to address.

You said: “[B]y embracing labels … we are letting other people know where we’re coming from and giving them a basis to start really getting to know us as individual human beings.”

There’s a patent contradiction in your own words, and I think it illustrates my point quite well. How, by letting ourselves be preceded by a mass-market label, do we give someone a basis to know us as “individual human beings”? Isn’t the foundational premise of individuality that one cannot be defined by a generic class descriptor?

If I told you “I’m an American” or “I’m an artist” or “I’m a Harvard alum” or “I’m a Democrat” or “I’m bisexual,” I really haven’t told you much about myself as an individual. You might *think* I’ve told you something about myself, but in fact you’re just using my label as a heuristic to infer traits that you *think* other members of the class possess — based on social stereotyping!

In fact, as it happens, I’m not a very typical example of any of those things. You’d actually get to know me a lot quicker if I avoided making any of those statements — because each of them carries with it a whole load of inaccurate baggage that just gets in the way.

It’s getting worse, really, this obsession and self-hatred in gay porn is just getting to a point were it is grotesquely homophobic. He seems like a really great guy – very down to earth and serious with his work. He said he doesnt keep secrets and I believe that is our answer people. He admitted that the movie is quite enjoyable but at the end of the day – whos bed would he rather sleep in? If anyone’s still reading this thread, I can tell you why I personally feel threatened when a man who identifies as gay to the world at large has sex with a woman and then says in a press release how much he liked it.

I do not care what orientation anyone is (unless I’m for reels interested, o’course) but when someone who advertises himself as gay jumps ship onto the carpet barge, it provides ammo for the people who say ghey is chosen. Those who live in SF (anon314159) may not realize this, but here in the heartland a biological basis defense is the only one that works. I cannot simply “feel… confident that it’s OK to date/marry/fuck men because it’s what [I] want to do.” That shit doesn’t work around here.

By the way, I AM “gay.” I am of course capable of finding women attractive, in the sense of, “She looks good in that dress,” but not sexually attractive at all. To me, pussy looks, smells, tastes, and feels like an open wound. And sounds like a wet fart.

Its a shame to read all these comments.
    1) If you don’t like women, don’t watch it. It is the exact same as: if you don’t like leather, or hair, don’t watch leather bears. Simple, right?
    2) Porn is pure fantasy – so the actor goes to fill the fantasies of another demographic that doesn’t suit your personal interests, and suddenly the portals of hell have been ripped open to absorb the gay community? Logic has clearly filled the void of your argument.
    3) I’d argue “good” porn actors don’t “need” their respective turn ons to be going simultaneously while they are doing a “job” that they are being payed to do, meaning that they were asked if they could “do their job” under certain “circumstances”, “gay, straight, and bisexual” situations obviously being a few.
    4) If someone throws the argument out that “being gay is a choice” after seeing Blake Riley’s one time switch, do the intelligent thing and point out that it is a PORN and that his sexuality will SWITCH to accommodate the DEMOGRAPHIC that the industry is trying to make MONEY off of. He could still be gay for all we know – not that it is any of our business – because obviously his position will change over and over to make him and his industry more money. Honestly – think more thoroughly…

Also, I love the gay scene of Dallas I love how Dallas boys have sex, I love the sense of community I see and lust for the newest hotties join ur crews and ur bedroom, which would have made Blake many friends been, and I love how rich older Texans gay or str8 shell out hard and fast for the company of young beautiful people..and company can mean just that…ya know I just know if I knew no one and had nowhere to go in that city I’d find a way to Cedar Springs work that …i guess..perfect ass and secure a place to stay that night and maybe for a week…then look for J-O-B…on the internet…or again where the boys are…bartend at a gay club or dance…or hang out and talk to everybody…cuz the leap from whatever to the only option of porn is bollocks…use ur looks and youth and i guess “perfect” ass as im sure uve done before to get somewhere…granted porn is a much easier and quicker option and great if ur inclined to the lifestyle…but it is never the only option nor do I wanna watch the sex of people who it really is the sole option.

and like really there was absolutely NOTHING in Dallas and he had to turn to porn “out of desperation” – ok…would it be hot if female porn star said that? be sad cuz its saying ur worth nothing else? i respect porn workers and wish i had the balls to do it too…not literally i have huge Texan balls…but they need to own their exhibitionism and choices cuz it is great im sure with the money and funtimes and a lot sex which we’d all love…but most of us cannot take that beyond fantasy and we’re struggling too..and trying to work hard or find work thats for us…and jack off breaks to hot porn help indeed…but hearing how porn saved this dude from homelessness in the implied deadend of city i grew up in that I know is BS but the rest of the world might not..is starting to piss me off.

oh and he was cheerleader…high school or college? did he cheer in college? and porn was the only option? even if hs…those camps and uniforms n stuff cost…he’s just moved to Dallas why didnt move back to wherever?

whatever i am into the straight for pay thing I just hope Blake Riley is a lil more Lively…do they film his scenes in slow mo or something? im kidding but he should flips during scenes to wake us up….or hey dont do flips dont worry do ur thing…just stop telling that stupid story or leave Dallas out of it.
