Black in Back: Dark Alley and Pitbull’s The Show
A perverted Bruce Wayne-esque billionaire hosts a sex-based audition for his newest plaything. New York City-based Dark Alley Media and Pitbull Productions’ inaugural joint effort The Show (Part 1) is a tongue-in-ass riff on reality television that revels in the sexiness Black and Latino actors without resorting to clumsy race cliches.
Social anxiety (whether over weight, cock size or race) quickly reverts to caricature in porn. How else to take movies with titles like Chocolate Cake with White Topping, Black Magic White Heat if not as the sexualized descendants of Stepin Fetchit skits? But most major studios still lack more than one black and Latino actor in their stable, and only a few — most notably Raging Stallion and Lucas Entertainment — mix it up without reducing the actors to stereotype.
Nimble start-up Dark Alley took a deft shortcut and partnered with Pitbull Productions on The Show, mixing DAM’s hardcore sarcasm with Pitbull’s self-declared “thug porn” realness. Black and Latino stalwarts like Supreme, T Malone and Mario Cruz battle it out for the attention of judges Tiger Tyson and Owen Hawk — and the fat wallet of billionaire Mattias Von Fistenberg. The nut-busting fun isn’t entirely relegated to bottomless bottoms swallowing miles of engorged cock, however, though it is a major factor (watching Tiger Tyson’s jaw-dropping cock wreak havoc on his co-stars is particularly compelling). I am so glad someone commented on the racist stereotyping of which men of color have to endure in adult entertainment. It amazes me that porn is even behind mainstream Hollywood in giving black and latino porn stars a chance to be something other than a “thug” or “ghetto boy” or just “an appendage” who drills white boys. Stepin Fetchit indeed it seems. When will people ever learn that men of color are just as viable as their white counterparts and want to be taken just as seriously, even if it is just porn. I am sick to death of the race cliches and the insulting video titles such as “Black Cocks in White Asses.” Can we not put the whole Mandingo fantasy to rest and just have fun. It’s supposed to be hot sex, not a racist pidgeonholing of played out stereotypes. I suspect many studios revert to portraying porn stars of color in this manner because there are some porn stars themselves who feel their image might be tainted if they actually engage in romantic sex with blacks and latinos, instead of being taken by force in some sexual way. In such similar instances as the days of when Blaxploitation films gained popularity, I think their porn counterparts sprung up because they were not given good credible sex parts. It will only change when the studios and the actors decide to treat each other as equals, even in the sex video industry.

Personally, I do all I can to avoid the black/white matrix in porn. The racial shorthand is SO boring! Blacks are all tops, Latinos are sexier blacks, & Asians, eternal bottoms. The bottom line for me is more productions need to be made for and by black & brown people, Enrique Cruz is my hero, with multi-ethnic casting (Asian, black, Latino, Turkish, Arab, Indian) but this reflects a larger world view of mine. As gay men we all know how important porn is in our community and it is time for you fellas out there to pick up your cameras to create and support work that reflects a broader sensual, sexual worldview. When you do the large studios with tons of production values and sex that seems frozen under glass will follow your lead. I will get off my soapbox now.

Great observations; particularly about the “Mandigo Fantasy” and the Blaxploitation-comparison. I kinda think that the reasons for the stereotyping of people of color in most porn is somewhat simpler than it seems. I tend to think that it’s for the same reason(s) that major fashion and tabloid magazines so seldom put a black or latin Images on their covers; They lose sales. Most consumers who buy magaines and porn are white. The End. So, it’s more likely than not that the majority are going to purchase a product that they relate to. I think that it’s the same reason that some Gay Clubs have “Black Night” or “Latin Night”, etc. People in general, tend to be most attracted to, comforable with and sexually interested in people they relate to. Sadly, inter-racial porn (Gay and Straight) still seems to fall into the category of Niche;hence the unimaginative titles and dumb tongue-in-cheek metaphors. Erique Cruz, Pitbull, Kristian Bjorn and Lucus Entertainment (in my opinion) have figured out how to present people of color as People in their videos v.s. semi-frightening sex montsters lurking in the shadows for white guys. End of story, I love Porn! I just don’t expect the industry to get smarter until the consumer gets smarter. I’ll willing to wait it out. Cocostore,Lucas and Cruz are likely to be the wave of the future.
