Behind The Scenes: Collin O’Neal Part 2

Picking up from where we left off yesterday, here’s the conclusion of our two-part interview with Collin O’Neal where Collin gives us insight into his casting process as well as some obstacles working with models who don’t necessarily identify as “gay”.

Where and how do you find your models?

I find my models mainly via gay social networking websites like BigMuscle, Gaydar, and GayRomeo. I met Pedro and Daniel from >Sao Paulo and >Miami, and Said from Lebanon over the net. There are a few times I meet guys on the street or in clubs like Jacko from >Lebanon who I met in a café in Aleppo, a city in Northern Syria and then I met my exclusive >Francisco Rey, while he was cleaning the pool of our hotel in the Dominican Republic. I am very shy in person, so it is very hard for me to just walk up to guys and pop the porn question.

How do you approach someone to do porn in a foreign country?

I mainly ask my friends to introduce me to guys or get a pre-feel for me concerning the porn issue. If my friend comes back and lets me know it is cool to talk to a guy about my business, then it still takes me some time to get to the porn question.

Do these guys identify as “straight” and if so, how do you get around that?

I do not like to work with guys that identify themselves as straight. I do not understand the whole gay for pay thing and I do not get any joy out of using or seeing straight guys in gay porn. There are plenty of masculine guys that would be considered “straight” that are gay out there. With that said, there are some countries where men have issues with identifying themselves as “gay.”

But the concept of “being gay” is different in some parts of the world … especially places where you seem to end up.

The Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Syria and to some extent Serbia are countries where being freely gay is not considered cool at all. In the Dominican Republic many men play with each other but neither consider themselves gay nor bi, just horny I guess. A gay in the Dominican Republic is an extremely feminine man that acts and dresses like a girl, so you are hard pressed to find even a liberal gay male admitting he is gay. In the Muslim world, religion has a strong influence and sex before marriage is just not done and women follow this law very strictly in fear of their life so men naturally end up playing with each other. However, when young Muslim men then get older they either marry or continue to live with their parents and have a secret gay life. I think Lebanese, Syrians and Jordanians are a little more free with being called gay, but they would never admit it to a non-gay.

Colin is correct about being gay in places like the Dominican Rep. I come from Puerto Rico and the American influenec there has been a mixed blessing. It also has brought all the religious right there and now San Juan is more homophobic than in the 80’s
