Where and how do you find your models?

I find my models mainly via gay social networking websites like BigMuscle, Gaydar, and GayRomeo. I met Pedro and Daniel from Sao Paulo and Miami, and Said from Lebanon over the net. There are a few times I meet guys on the street or in clubs like Jacko from Lebanon who I met in a café in Aleppo, a city in Northern Syria and then I met my exclusive Francisco Rey, while he was cleaning the pool of our hotel in the Dominican Republic. I always thought director Jett Blakk's extremely clever, plot-driven movies would be a good match for Falcon, whose movies -- especially lately -- have been pretty flat, story-wise. I made some introductions and the powers that be hired him for a multi-picture deal. Jett thanked me by stabbing me to death in Dare, his first movie for them, which started out as a remake of Flashpoint but quickly took on a life of its own.

We filmed the scene at the LA County Fair last September and it was a really fun day. Despite an ambitious shooting schedule, Jett, my murderer (old-school gay porn star Lou Cass) and I found time to eat corn dogs, go on rides, and gab about horror movies. For the climax of the scene, Lou stabbed me in the Spook House and I even got to use fake blood (it was ketchup, but still). I posted a few pictures from the day on my Flickr account (warning, these pictures contain absolutely NO nudity).

The weather was crazy that day: sunny one minute and torrential downpour the next. As a result, a drop of rain was on the lens in a few of the shots so Falcon asked for a re-shoot. Second time around we shot the scene up here in San Francisco; it wasn't as fun but the final product looks great nonetheless:

Falcon ended up releasing Dare as their big release of 2007. At the GayVNs, Dare was nominated for best orgy and best screenplay and Lou got nominated for best non-sex performance. Neither won (GayVN judges seem a bit biased against Falcon the last couple of years), but I'm pretty sure it will do better at the Grabbys. Make no mistake: I have no delusions about my contribution to Dare. I have no aspirations of becoming an actor and I realize that most people will end up fast-forwarding right through it to the actual hot parts, but it was fun and I got to feel like star for a day so what more could I ask for?

Leave it to Pitbull to confuse the race relations even further. Despite a misleadingly subtle title, Trunks 2 -- the latest opus from Hot House director Steven Scarborough -- is more than just a hot porn; the movie's fantastical, color saturated, heavily stylized shots fall somewhere between David LaChappelle's fashion photography and the graphic intensity of a DC comic. Grizzled hunk Gus Mattox drives Colby Taylor's chassis hard in this road trip romance, but sex is just part of what makes this one of the best porn films so far this year. Big Rig covers lots of sexual ground for a DVD -- from circuit-queen key parties and unfulfilling relationships (Colby takes to the road after boyfriend Eddy Mataro chooses scene over substance) to gas station bathrooms and trucker cabs. It's an ambitious project that Buckshot director John Rutherford pulls off with style and raw sexual energy.

There's a new set of sexy gay twins doing the porn rounds, but they haven't seemed to be able to settle on a name. In High Octane's Twin Towers (above, left), they're listed as Alex and Ian Lynch. In Studio 2000's Twin Devils (above, middle), they're listed as Jack and James LaCroix. In Bel Ami's Flings 2, they're listed as Daniel and Jean Lautrec.

In all three movies, they appear in the same scene and have sex with other men but don't touch each other. This puts them in the same category as other identical twins who almost have sex on camera, alongside Dean and Dave Resnick, and Gabriel and Oscar Odyssey.

Their newest release, Trapped 1 & 2, signals a rebirth for the studio, getting it back to its grimy roots. There's little plot for the for the hardhat-and-wife-beater'd construction workers and that's just fine. It's enough to watch former amateur hottie Brad Star piss in a watercooler, with Joey Milano on hand to drain the rest of him.

We love when studios stick true to their roots -- in this case, the costume-filled muscle pictorials of the 50s and 60s from Athletic Model Guild (a time paid homage to in Rick Tugger's amazing porno There Goes the Neighborhood). Of course, we love it even more whenever you can get Jason Adonis in a green leaf dress. And little Timmy Thomas all butched up in a sailor's outfit. Adorable AND sexy!

Rod Barry was kind enough to show me a rough cut of "Down The Drain," his plumbing-themed directorial debut for All Worlds. It was a real nasty, real perverted treat -- not unlike Rod himself. Outside observers assume that the porn industry is only after one thing -- your money. But the rise in popularity -- with both porn consumers and producers -- is a testament to industry's maturation. The release of the GayVN Award noms earlier this week -- and the cock comparisons that soon followed -- show an increasing number of studios are as interested in popular and critical acclaim as they are cash.

(I'll temper any brag at our being nominated again for Best Screenplay for Wet Palms by putting parentheses around it, like it ain't no thing.)

Of course, with award season comes boasting. Press releases for new films frequently tout their film as the director's "best ever," or the studio's "biggest release yet," to a degree that borders on comic. In the past year I've heard about 'the most expensive porn ever made,' or 'the largest production ever staged' or, merely, the most successful porn film ever. Films are routinely "historic," productions "Hollywood quality." Now, there have been some amazing productions this year, but the endless hype can devalue the linguistic currency.

The average week brings ten new movies -- it's a lot of porn to watch, so you can't really blame producers are marshalling all their superlatives. But it doesn't mean all films are equal (we do, after all fully deserve to win Best Screenplay), we just need to start articulating better what makes them so good. As we approach the GayVN Awards (March 9, West Hollywood), we'll review some of our favorite moments from the 2005 year in porn. Here are the nominees:

In the porn documentary The Making of Arabesque, Raging Stallion director Chris Ward explores a crucial visual difference between the films of Hollywood and those of the gay porn industry. "In Hollywood," Ward explains, "you can have shadows because they're cool -- they make the movies. In porn you gotta see it. If you can't see it, it ain't there, is it?" Or so conventional wisdom goes. Luckily, a few very talented directors -- including Ward himself -- are trying it differently.

All the big studios are dropping their big releases these past two months, and it's been tough trying to try to keep up with them all. Channel 1's biggest epic since Bolt, Wrong Side Of The Tracks, is about to hit retail, and director Chi Chi LaRue has really out-done himself with this two part epic.

Whereas Bolt was a plot-light fetishistic fantasia, "Tracks" is more firmly rooted in reality. Chi Chi, who normally eschews script-driven, storyline-heavy movies for conceptual pieces (see Kolide, the Link series) really moves out of his comfort zone to amazing results.

Johnny Hazzard, after getting mouth-fucked by his abusive step dad for the last time, leaves the family trailer and embarks on a soul-searching journey of sorts. He meets up with a hooker with a heart of gold, Marcus Iron, who shows him the ins-and-outs of being a street hustler. A trick gone bad sends him packing again. His path crosses with Chad Savage, (on loan from All Worlds), who takes him in and tries to make an honest man out of him.

Granted, this industry is small but we can't be everywhere. The following are the five biggest stories we missed -- or chose not to report on -- and the fascinating reasons why.

1. Dick Wolf Retires From Porn To Open a Pot Club
Fuzzy powerbottom Dick Wolf caused a major a stir in the gay porn world in '04 and '05 thanks to his good looks and intense performances in Hot House's Skuff 2, Mo' Bubble Butt, Manhunt.TheMovie and finally Perfect Fit with Aiden Shaw. Then he quietly left the biz.

Amidst some false starts and speculation among his fans as to what his next steps were (and some bogus claims he was going to re-emerge under a new persona called "Johnny America"), in 2005 he opened a medical marijuana club in San Francisco (three doors down from my house, no less). It's still legal to sell pot in CA thanks to Prop 215, but, in light of neo-con mania sweeping the nation, it's dicey and raids are a real possibility. I was afraid mentioning it might draw unwanted attention, so I refrained but then there was a big article about it in Unzipped a few months later, so I guess I was being over cautious. Anyway, it's called Sanctuary, and it's at O'Farrell and Hyde in SF. Sadly, it's not open to the public (unless you have a doctor's note) but if you do, definitely check it out.

When we covered the filming of Raging Stallion's Arabesque in late July, the reaction was passionate -- rarely have I seen porn fans so aggressively question the nature of race, fantasy and the erotic. If the first installment (there are four) of The Making of Arabesque lacked the hardcore action I've come to love from Raging Stallion behind-the-scenes docs, the latter ones positively sizzle with sex. (I first got into the RS documentary style -- hardcore sex that puts the anal in banal -- with 2003's Plexus Hardcore. Michael Brandon fluffs the actors, Chris Ward shoots the sex and a mystery cat wanders the dank halls of the set. Really mixes the erotic with the tragicomic, just the way I like.

Hot House auteur Steven Scarborough returns to the Falcon director's chair for the second time this year, as part of their "guest director" series with Beefcake -- a movie perhaps best described as 100% Falcon: 11 classic (read: godlike) Falcon men basically just having sex around and in a pool.

Now, don't get me wrong: I love the stuff Steven's doing for Hot House now. But Beefcake takes me back to the movies he directed for Falcon back in the day; the kind of porn I cut my gay porn teeth on. Stuff like Perfect Summer, Summer Buddies, Plunge, Down Home, The Pledge Masters and so on.

Beefed-up covermodel Tyler Hill (pictured) looks insanely buff and hot as ever. The rest of the cast -- Roman Heart, Ethan Kage, Derrick Vinyard (my personal fave), Erik Rhodes (Mike's personal fave), Arpad Miklos, Jed Wilcox, Robert Van Damme -- are all these hyper-muscled supermen that leave me less than eloquent. I love gay porn, don't get me wrong: I follow it like your average straight man follows sports: I'm endlessly fascinated by the industry as a whole, and each studio's new releases are exciting to me on one level or another. However, I do occasionally get a bit burnt out. Sometimes things get repetitive and as releases get bigger, longer and more epic, I do find myself wondering how anyone can top anyone anymore.

TitanMedia is one studio never to rest on their laurels. Their harshest critics seem to be themselves: They have an answer to the "what's next" quandary -- and seem to have the answers -- before anyone else can even ask. The intriguing stills for their upcoming opus "Cirque Noir" (a sequel of sorts to their deliciously sinister 2003 release Carny) features S&M rent-a-clown Ouchie The Clown, a contortionist named Stretch who fists himself while getting fucked and -- get this -- a scene with female-to-male phenom Buck Angel, who from the waist up looks like your average leather daddy, but "down there" has the fully functioning vagina he was born with.

What happens when two coupled tops tire of sixty-nining? Call the relationship counselor for some Freudian anal-ysis! Jerry Douglas' eagerly awaited sex-and-story fest, Beyond Perfect, hit stores this week (and, in an tech-forward move, on lauded gay VOD site NakedSword.com a few days after as part of their new Premiere Series of new, high-profile, films).

Hot House director Steven Scarborough is possibly the sickest fuck in an industry full of sick fucks. His latest opus, The Missing, uses one of Scarborough's favored erotic scenarios: the paramilitary-style kidnappin' and sex-slavin' of a work-a-day stiff. His 1992 The Abduction Trilogy (for Falcon Studios) involved similar themes (not to mention a missing film canister nefariously hidden up someone's rear. Brilliant!)

When Michael Lucas' Dangerous Liaisons came out this spring, we were blown over by the lush visuals, raw sexual energy and herd of handsome men that populated his adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos's 18th century tale. And while I got an unrelenting hard-on watching Ryan Phillipe in Cruel Intentions, it's M. Lucas' fashion-world-based interpretation of the novel that made me shoot.

Detractors claim that good cinematography and stylish clothes are a waste of time in porn. But who hasn't dreamed of the Ambercrombie catalogue -- or a Helmut Newton shoot or Gucci ad -- turning into a full-on porno?

Did you know that people started calling Marines "Jarheads" during WWII when the Mason Jar Company started making their helmets? It's a fact!

Anyway, are you unsure of which movie to see this weekend? Despite the high gay appeal of Jarhead, Sam Mendes' adaptation of Anthony Swofford's gritty Gulf War memoir, (a few flashes of Jake Gyllenhaal's ass, but despite the tagline, no cocksucking), I would most definitely pick JarHead, starring Mason Jarr. Or really anything from Mr. Jarr's also gritty Ouevre. I've always found the swarthy real life former Marine to be inexplicably captivating. Most decrepit of all, poor excitable bathhouse manager Brady Littleton (Bret Wolfe) has gone down the stoney end -- thanks to Simon Jett -- with purloined and discontinued pharmaceuticals and, in a stunning porn first, discovers he's pregnant with a baby. Yes, in his butt.

In just over a week, Falcon Studios will release Cross Country and judging from the preview clips, it's gonna set a new standard in porn. And I'm not just saying that 'cause Jack and I wrote it. Think this year's Taking Flight, only replace the plane set for the unspoiled natural beauty of New Zealand.

Director Chris Steele brought a bevy of men -- some we're all familiar with like Lifetime Falcon Exclusive Matthew Rush, and Exclusives Roman Heart, Erik Rhodes, Kane O'Farrell, Dean Monroe, and Brad Patton, and some truly exciting newcomers like Tyler Marks, Derrick Vinyard, Ethan Kage -- to New Zealand for a sexual rumble in a South Pacific jungle.

Last year when Dennis Bell acquired the rights to the granddaddy of all gay porn studios, Athletic Model Guild, no one was quite sure what he was going to do with it. While somewhat tame by today's standards, Mizer's historical physique model portraits and wrestling movies paved the way to the gay porn we all know and love today. The collection of assets that Bob had created since the studios inception in the 1940s was tremendous -- over a million negatives and hundreds of reels of film and several pallets of videos, many unreleased.

While they've compiled and released some of the old stuff onto DVD in the past year (see Spanking Potpourri # 31 or Story Film Classics), it comes as no surprise that they'd start producing new hardcore stuff. Being released this week, "AMG Resurection: A New Beginning," pays homage to Mizer's iconic style, but bridges it to modern times with a truly stellar cast of favorites (Jason Adonis! Filippo Romano!) and some adorable, horse-hung young things.

People often deride porn as flat medium with only lurid visual appeal -- and with its graphic imagery, it's easy to make that assumption. But we don't have sex with our eyeballs -- the hottest stuff takes place inside our heads (and hands).

A year ago COLT Studio Group President John Rutherford and screenwriter Jerry Douglas finished shooting the gay porn cowboy epic Buckleroos for the studio's Buckshot Productions line. The film went on to take home top honors at both the GayVN Awards and the Grabbys, proving that the legendary COLT Studio had been revived and reinvigorated with a storyline that paid as much attention to emotion as it did motion. This year, the Rutherford/Douglas team is taking the heat from farm directly to the frontal lobe. Analysis will never be the same.

Lately I've been noticing a frustrating contradiction in the world of gay porn: On one hand porn fans are overwhelmingly bored by the mass predictability of porn. On the other hand, people freak out whenever anyone dares stray from the formula or try something new.

Case in point: Heaven to Hell, Chi Chi LaRue's directorial swan song for Falcon Studios. When they released some promo images, they were met with negative comments and even a few bad reviews (remarkable since review screeners didn't go out until a few weeks later). When people actually got around to watching it, most reviewers flipped for it, and not just because Brad Patton bottomed for the first time. The elaborate production -- feathers, tattoos, devil horns and all -- worked really well as a gay porn fantasia.

With our military and cultural focus on Iraq, it's not surprising that Americans fetishize Arab men. But it is surprising that -- short of Abu Graib -- no one's shot an Arab gay porn. Until now.

I'll admit it. It's hard for me to get off to porn if I know the actors involved. There are exceptions, of course, but I'm often distracted by my feelings for the actor. Is he whiny? Limp. The WP did pretty fucking great, garnering 11 nominations, (only to be overshadowed by Buckleroos, which got 17 and Horse: Fallen Angel 5, which got 14, and Bolt which tied us with 11. Like, whatevs...) Michael Lucas' Lost and Lucas Kazan's Backstage both got 9 nominations. Falcon's Taking Flight 1 + 2 got a respectable 7. My favorite Porn star-turned-designer-turned-porn star-turned-porn producer Ray Dragon's Whiplash got 5. Double Delights, an all-double penetration flick, got a surprising 4 nominations.

Last night I watched Big Timber from Falcon Studios. It's a recent 2003 release starring one of my dreamboats, Josh Weston.

I've been reviewing a lot of movies and Banana Guide, and I thought I'd "seen it all", particularly in story lines, but I'd never seen this topic covered before. Big Timber took a bit of a political bent in that it concerns a group of environmental activists that chain themselves to redwood trees to prevent the butch lumberjacks from chopping them down. The dialogue at the beginning was kinda clever with a bit of irony thrown in, but I was hoping for more political fireworks to wrap it up at the end.

Big Timber also stars Clay Maverick, Leo Bramm, Justin Dragon, Joe Foster, Jack Ryan, Trey Rexx, Brad Benton, Jerek, Paul Johnson, and Ross Stuart.

I really liked Big Timber, but given the choice between the Sierra Club Sissies and the butch lumberjacks, I'll take the loggers, especially after seeing the 3-way with Clay Maverick, Jack Ryan and Justin Dragon in the back of a truck.

It's a good day if I receive a check in the mail AND porn. Yesterday I got both.

Last night I watched "2nd Gear" directed by Chi Chi LaRue, the sequel to last year's "In Gear" starring former San Francisco resident, Lance Gear. The movie is up for 9 awards at the GayVn's, including Best Actor, Best Director and Best All Sex Video.

The movie was shot sometime in the early 90's when I had a friend named Miss P working at Falcon as a production assistant. I brought Miss P to party at a friend's gorgeous designer house on Potrero Hill. Miss P convinced Randy to let them use the house for a Falcon shoot (so he could earn a little finder's fee).

"Billy's Tale" is a Cinderella story about a sullen, trod-upon little twink and his evil (yet incredibly hunky) step brothers. The brothers abuse the boy emotionally and physically by repeatedly plowing Billy's "Tail". Billy gets his revenge when he meets his Prince Charming.

They used the house for just an outdoor party scene and some still photography inside. Since I was also instrumental in getting the location, they called me to be an "extra" for the party scene. If you look closely about a third of the way into the movie, you'll see the side of my head in the background standing around drinking wine and wearing suspenders.

Look Ma, I'm in a Falcon movie!

Since there was no sex scenes shot there, I didn't get to see much. I recall the gossip of the day was that the original Prince Charming was a no-show, so they had to scramble for a replacement. Prince Charming 2 showed up looking like a lumberjack, but an hour later the hair and makeup department had done their magic. Fans of chest hair would have been absolutely shocked at the transformation after he got all his fur removed!
