The Maverick Men Are A Colossal Illusion! (Just Not How You Think)

To tell you the truth, I’d always thought that there was something fishy about the Maverick Men. Cole and Hunter started out doing XTube videos for kicks, but when they became the most popular guys on the site (and started getting guys asking if they could join) things began to change. They started taking on thirds (and fourths). But the boys use testing over condoms, and given my experiences with testing, I assumed it was just a euphemism.

They were in LA a few weeks ago and I caught up with them. Couldn’t have been more charmed. And I couldn’t have been more wrong.

But to the condoms (or lack thereof). How could they test? Half the guys seemed to be guys they picked up on the street, or met in the bathroom of a club. Turns out it’s all an illusion. Not the testing, though — but the casual hook-ups themselves. According to Cole and Hunter, nothing is as spontaneous as it looks. Each hook-up starts with pictures. Or Manhunt. And emails. Then Skype conversations to determine if the prospective hook-up is nutters. Then more conversations. Then testing and proof of testing (the boys get tested once a month regardless). And if they’re suspicious, or don’t have time, they use condoms. It’s certainly not fool proof, but given what I’ve seen in other areas of this business, they came across as oddly responsible.

And they stemmed my other objection: they don’t pay models. While this is hardly a workable business model for everyone, it also removes the most loathsome aspect of bareback porn — the incentive to risk your health for money. You may say that it’s still dangerous, and you may be right. But in some ways, it renders an otherwise public decision to the status of a personal matter.

The second illusion: they’re not swingers. They don’t have sex outside the relationship, unless its for the camera. So even though I love them, unless I take after Robert Chandler, they won’t have sex with me. It seems almost perverse, doesn’t it? Maybe they were giving me a snow job. Unless I get on camera with them, that’s all I’m ever going to get from them.

For someone in the porn world, I find it hard to believe that you could have actually thought it was all spontaneous and real. Here’s a clue for you as well: “Baitbus” is fake.

As for the testing, I don’t see any problem there at all. Experience has proven on the straight side of porn, that testing works exceedingly well. On the gay side with emphasis on condoms, employment of HIV positive actors, and spotty or no testing: not so good.

You know, fantasy can blind even us hardened pornographers. And like I said, I knew there was something going on. It just wasn’t what I thought.

The Maverick Men really are every bit as fantastic as you think. Since I first met them, they’ve been charming and handsome and honest. I’ve known them for a few years; I met them on Manhunt. I highly recommend trying to get in a video if you can: it’ll blow your mind.

On an episode of the Logo show “I Girl, 5 Gays”, two of the cast members, Dean McArthur and his roommate, said they ran into the Maverick Men at a beach in Boston and volunteered to have sex with them. Dean said they were told that the only way that would happen would be if it could be filmed for a video. Too bad it didn’t happen.

It is porn, so it’s hard to have illusions.

However, love it when they break in some twinky booty.

I chatted with one of them on Grindr when they were here in LA. I’d like to have had a 3way with them – and they were very enthusiastic too – but they do hold tight to having any 3way sex for porn’s sake and I am not interested in being in a video. In some alternate universe where I do make a porn, it’s with condoms and certainly NOT for free. Besides, my fave Maverick videos are the ones just between the two of them, where the older, big dicked guy fucks the younger cute bottom.

“So even though I love them, unless I take after Robert Chandler, they won’t have sex with me.”

How did I get dragged into all of this?
What am I talking about? I love the attention!

I wouldn’t promote these two like they are doing something positive. They are having tons of unprotected sex (with “testing” should I add) and putting loads of men at risk. I don’t admire them at all.

How are they putting anyone at risk?. Is any of the men on their site having sex against their will?. Is anyone of the a minor?. If there’s any risk at all, it’s not these guys creating it; these are all grown-ass men and are able to make their own decisions.

I agree. Testing once a month is worthless without strict condom use. Seroconversion from infection can happen after the negative test result. These guys are pretending to be responsible, but in fact they’re completely dangerous and so are those they have sex with. USE CONDOMS EVERY TIME, GUYS!

The sad part about bareback porn is the fact that as long as there are people out there willing to buy it the siteowners and porn producers will continue to produce it. To them it has been and will always be about the money. How anyone can put money over a persons life still gets me but it is the society we live in today but it could be changed but that can only happen if people start spending their money on watching safe sex and avoid anyone producing bareback porn. Here is hoping that these guys that live their life doing bareback porn are lucky and have a very long and productive life. The odds of that are not good.

That’s a bunch of condescending BS ‘GMan’. Live and let live. The cornerstone of the struggle for every LGBT community’s right is we should allow adult, consensual people do whatever they want to do in their private sex lives, even if it seems shocking or immoral to some. Yes, even if it’s dangerous. Who are you to tell me what I can like or not?. Who are you to tell a porn actor what he can or can’t do on camera?. That is not different at all from the arguments conservative extremist used to make to defend anti-Sodomy laws. There are many of us who enjoy bareback, and there are many people willing to perform; that’s the way it is and it’ll always be.

Plus, why do you focus only on bareback?. It’s a fact HIV can be transmitted via oral sex; yet I’ve never seen anyone ever wearing a condom while receiving oral sex in porn, nor have I heard anyone complaining. Even wearing condoms is not 100% risk-free.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for things to change; it’s the world we live in, there’s room for everyone.

@ Jay: No one is trying to tell you what you can and cannot like. All I will say is don’t expect anyone to raise funds for something that is preventable. There are more worthy causes than you.

That’s classy MrPurdue. I like bareback porn, I defend the right of adults to do as they please in their personal lives, so of course I’m an uninsured HIV-positive crackhead. I can watch whatever I want, that’s not necessarily a reflection of what I DO in my private life. Ironically, most gays who oppose bb porn are queens who never bothered to take care of themselves and lost 90% of their equally dumb friends to the 80’s aids outbreak.

BTW, Rocco, I couldn’t possibly agree more with you, there’s nothing hotter than a gay man enthusiastically enjoying gay sex; that’s what I love about this guys.

I don’t like the bareback porn industry either. I think any time you’re asked to choose money over safety, it’s a dodgy business. That’s why I thought the fact that they don’t pay models offered us a chance to look at things in a less charged environment. Do I think OSHA has a role in this business? Absolutely. Does mandating condoms make sense? Possibly. I am not a bare-backing libertarian by any means.

That said, I think that it’s time we have an honest discussion about sexuality and sexual practices the way they’re lived. By concentrating solely on condoms, we’re treating barebacking the same way the Christian right talks about teen pregnancy. That the only way to solve things is by maintaining an absolute position and eschewing discussion.

Gays only do bareback because they are so miserable and don’t care about their lives or the lives of others, they only care about the next hit of coke, their next lay or their next drink; and you wonder why people don’t accept them.

I do like the Maverick Men. Their business models sounds pretty good and it obviously works for them.

I understand the prep that goes into their storyline and that makes sense. The only time I have been disappointed is the Muscle Fucker with “Angelo.” They made it seem as if the guy was some random gym pick-up when, in fact, Angelo is just another porn performer. That made me think of Maverick Men as just another studio, but better story tellers (most of the time.)

Anyway, continued success to them. BTW, they could update their content more frequently.

The Maverick Men have something all the other “candid” sites don’t have!

Two guys who E-N-J-O-Y having sex with other guys! And get this – the guys they’re having sex with are actually enjoying themselves! Even better – their movies actually convey G-A-Y sex!

Sad to say that a gay men are merely a token at a gay porn shoot these days! And the likelihood of all the guys in a scene are gay is a rarity!

Their success is 95% enjoyment of what they’re doing and 5% bareback.
