With Election 2016 in full swing, here’s a telling statistic: on Presidential election day in November 2008, 37% of Americans cast their vote. On October 31 of that same year, however, it was estimated that 66% of the country participated in Halloween.

The origins of Halloween are often attributed to mystic Celtic folklore as a Samhain celebration of mystery, magic, superstition, witches and ghosts. After out-growing a major frown by the Puritans, the global Halloween multi-billion dollar frivolity as we know it today owes it origins to the modern gay culture and our Ground Zero, San Francisco.

What started as a costume contest in 1948 at Cliff’s Variety Store in San Francisco, as the Castro got gayer, so did Halloween. Later, our own Sister Roma and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence took over for Cliff, Sadly, the event turned tragic in 2006 when nine people were shot. But it takes more than bullets to stop us. Especially seeking relief from the ravages of AIDS, the ’80’s saw dual celebrations in New York and the rest of the country was, for once, happy to join our celebrations.
