When I think of what brought me into the gay porn industry, many factors — including luck — come into play, but a big one was the book Making it Big: Sex, Porn Stars, and Me — Chi Chi LaRue’s autobiography which I read about ten years ago. Once I read it there was no turning back. Over the years, he’s turned out so many movies it’s easy to loose track. In the past year alone he brought us BOLT, Kollide, Supersoaked, Wicked and the extravagant Heaven to Hell.
He sits at the helm of a true gay porn empire that Martha Stewart would be envious of: His own porn studio, a bevy of books and scads of Web sites. But perhaps most importantly he’s taken an army of hot boys and made them porn stars: Johnny Hazzard anyone?
But what can I really say about Mssr. LaRue that hasn’t already been said? An auteur. A visionary. A true porn legend. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to call him a friend. Plug away! I’m getting ready to film our biggest movie of the year called “Wrong Side of the Tracksâ€, starring Rascal Exclusive Johnny Hazzard, All Worlds Exclusive Chad Savage, Marcus Iron, Trevor Knight, and newcomer Benjamin Bradley. Also in the cast will be our other exclusives Luca DiCorso, Eddie Stone, Theo Blake, and our two new bodybuilder finds Luke Strong and Tyler Riggz. I’m also excited about our new all-oral project called “HEADâ€, and I’m sure you can guess where that takes place. For any fans of the boys of straight porn, we just finished “Str8 Shots 2â€, with straight studs Tommy Gunn, Grant Michaels, Tyler Knight, and more.

Whenever I ask porn stars how they cam up with their name, they almost always say, “Chi Chi gave it to me”. How do you come up with porn star names? I always ask the guy the name of the street he grew up on, his first pet’s name or someone he had a crush on in high school. Between that we can usually come up with a name. In the case of some people like Bobby Williams and Robbie Angel, it just came to me when I met them.

How did you come up with the name Chi Chi LaRue? A bunch of us guys were sitting around trying to come up with our drag names and my friend Michael had a nickname for me called Chi Chi Box, so I took Chi Chi and my friend Scott came up with LaRue.

Have you slept with a lot of porn stars in your day? TONS! (laughs).

Does working in porn for so long desensitize you to sex? Absolutely, that’s why I direct straight porn for Vivid, it makes me appreciate man sex.
Who is your very best friend? Are you trying to get me killed? I have many but the two that stick out in my mind are my dear friends Bradley Picklesimer, and Vince Fauci aka Mona.

Who is Taylor Hudson? That was a director name thought up for me by Catalina Video because they thought Chi Chi LaRue wasn’t butch enough. When the Chi Chi name became popular, of course they switched it back to Chi Chi.

How do you define your porno aesthetic? Dirty, delicious, fun and safe.

What’s the first porn you saw? “Pretty Peaches†starring Sharon Kane.

What’s your best movie to date? If you say your last one, we’re so not going to believe you. It would have to be the “Link†series or Idol Country, but of course Echoes and BOLT are pretty damn good too.

What’s the best porn you’ve seen in the past year that you haven’t directed? I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I will: Buckleroos was amazing, I’m very proud of Jerry and John.

What porn director most influenced you? Joe Gage, his movies were and still are the best.

What mainstream director most influenced you? That’s easy, the amazing John Waters.

What single element is absolutely essential for a good fuck scene? Chemistry.

Does you family know? Absolutely. They know about everything. They even get me little drag items for Christmas.

Your stranded on a desert island with nothing but a DVD player: which one porn and one porn star would you bring along? Joe Gage’s “Closed Set†and Filippo Romano, because he is damn fun and I know he would make me laugh the whole time.

Chi Chi is great — one of the truly good-hearted people in this business. He directed me in my first film and couldn’t have been more supportive. From the lessons I learned I was able to go on and do some pretty good work for other studios — always with an eye on what was important to make the scene work!

I hate to use the word “classy” when it comes to anything porn related, but in a weird way, it applies. I say CLassy because while so many people in the porn industry are proving themselves to be “nasty, bitchy queens”, like Joe said above, Chi Chi has always been a refreshingly articulate, intelligent, and *totally depraved* human being. The first time I met Chi Chi I was put in a thong and presented to her as she sat at the bar at the Eagle in Columbus Ohio. Her first words to me were “What’s up Ugly?” I don’t know if you remember that Chi Chi but I do. At the time I was crushed but then quickly realized you were joking.
Years later I joined Falcon and got to work with Chi Chi on a number of movies. Some of those movies are the fondest memories I have. I had so much fun working with her.

I haven’t spoken to ChiChi, in 15 years and have never forgiven him for not mentioning me in his book; it was thanks to me and my fabulous recommendation that he got his 1st job in LA at Catalina, (though I did tell them he ate too much pizza) but I’ll let bygones be bygones. Telling people I knew ChiChi back in Minneapolis pre-superstardom has given me hours of useful cocktale chit-chat. And I’ll always cherish the memories of that special weekend in Hollywood I slept on the wig hair encrusted floor of that 1st tacky apartment and our special weekend in Vegas at his 1st CES show…Viva La Chi-Chi and long may she live!!!!

I remember the first time I “met” Chi Chi…I was a newbie reviewer for “Adult Video News” and I had given a lukewarm review to a movie she had spent a lot of time on, and a positive review to a movie she knocked out in one day.
I happened to be at Mickey Skee’s house when Miss Chi Chi called, and Mickey told her I was there. I was ten feet away and I heard her yell, “PUT HIM ON THE PHONE!!!” Yikes!
We actually had a terrific conversation and I credit her for improving my skills as a reviewer in those early days, and for planting in my head the idea to direct. Every serious reviewer should direct at least once! You’ll think twice, or three times, about tearing apart someone’s movie.

Chi Chi taught me how to enjoy being gay. In london in the 90’s when i was coming out the only sexy masculine role models that we could get hold of where in Chi Chi’s films.
Perhaps as a result, porn stars always fascinated me. I just got home from San Francisco where i caught matthew rush in 12 naked men, the show about hustling hollywood etc. I was sat in the front row- the bugger nearly killed me as he rollerbladed past me. For anyone who gets the chance, go and see this play. I guess chi chi won’t mind sharing this limelught with mathew. he was great. the play is sexy and funny and mr rush can act.
