Male Split Beavers: Gay Porn's Final Frontier?
Esteemed porn scholar Jeffrey Escoffier was recently explaining the evolution of nudity in film. In the mid-1950s, directors like Russ Meyer pioneered nudity in films known as Nudie-Cuties, campy comedies that featured lots of boobs. These gave way to "Beavers" -- movies that showed female crotch -- and these led to the "Split Beaver" movies, which actually showed women with their legs open. Without these there would be no porn today -- gay or straight.
Got me thinking: It's actually somewhat rare to see the gay-equivalent of the "Split Beaver" in gay porn. We get lots of shots of things getting stuffed into assholes, (and some directors are really obsessed with showing a gaping one) but how often do you actually get to see an unobstructed, pristine asshole -- one thats not obscured by the ass cheeks? The Gay Sex Vote: Tiger Tyson Thinks McCain's Got It In the Bag
Tiger Tyson's a scrappy prize-fighter (while on the set for a recent photo shoot, he told me that he grew up fighting and still thinks that it's the second best way to take out your aggressions). Remembering Jean-Daniel Cadinot
To me one of the saddest things about Jean-Daniel Cadinot's death is not so much his relatively young age (64) but the fact that his work has become somewhat unknown to gay audiences in the US for reasons I'm having a hard time understanding. He was a true legend and at the forefront of the field since he started making gay porn 30 years ago.
A teenage runaway, Cadinot studied photography at the prestigious National School of Photography in France. After working for a mainstream French film company, he started directing porn in 1978 -- first as "Tony Dark" and under his real name after 1984.
A filmmaker and a perfectionist, Cadinot never succumbed to the lure of making a ton of money by churning out titles. Literally icon Dennis Cooper explained the complex concept behind "Aime Comme Minets" ("All Of Me") on his blog last year:
"...the film is structured around an actual audio recording of director Cadinot interviewing a young man named Pierre Buisson during the performer's first audition for the director. Excerpts from this interview are played over a silent visual recreation of the original audition that was shot a number of years later ... After the sex scenes were shot, Cadinot waited four years to film the recreation of the audition so that Buisson would look noticeably older in that part of the film than he did in the sex scenes."
Cadinot wrote his own eulogy, which was posted on his blog after he died last week. It's as fittingly eloquent and thought-provoking as his body of work:
"An erect phallus is a symbol of life, a cross a symbol of death."

Falcon Banishes the Cold With 'Winter Heat'
The thaw might be breaking in most of the country, but Falcon's still unwrapping packages from a few months back. Gay Porn Movies: Screaming Eagle's Jock Itch
Raging Stallion has been on a roll aesthetically -- in part, I think because of their ability to take risks, to bring in new talent and to develop new talent from within their own ranks. It helps, of course, that they're doing strongly and producing frequently -- when you've got three or four movies coming out a month, you can afford to take risks.
While in-house directors like David Hempling, Ben Leon and Chris Ward have resulted in the studios strongest titles, like GRUNTS or Arabesque, star-directors like Collin O'Neal, Steve Cruz and, in the case of the Screaming Eagle co-production of Jock Itch, Jake Deckard, have allowed the large San Francisco studio to stay vigorous in an increasingly calcified industry.
There's an insouciance in Jock Itch that at times feels new wave-y and at other times just cocky (Jake Deckard flips off the viewer from the back cover of the box). The video draws on jock imagery and signifiers, but doesn't take them seriously: this isn't a gay 90s costume drama. It's raw, nasty and sweaty -- and not to bad to look at, either. If only we could smell it ...

Gay Porn Triplets (Finally) Get Naked
