Off the Set with ... Michael Lucas

After the record wins for Michael Lucas's La Dolce Vita at the 2007 GayVNs, the talented Mr. Lucas, always a very public figure, became nearly ubiquitous. His incendiary columns for the New York Blade are as well received as his blog and his nearly endless stream of releases (not counting the piss and cum) make the man hard to miss, even if you're trying.

This week, on a Off the Set with... video interview shot prior to his wins, Michael ditches his role as shit-starter to reveal the viciously funny charmer that we first fell in love with. Lucas extols his lack of adult industry friends (Spencer Quest excepted), his good side (both, natch) and his love of New York. It may be the softest side of Michael we've ever seen ("You fat cunt!" vituperative notwithstanding).

Seeing Stars: Off the Set With Dark Alley

Does anything cause as much hand-wringing and cock-ringing as fetish? To the fetishist (whether of piss, leather, lace or reading glasses), nothing is so normal as his own desire. To the outside observer, however, the fetishist is a damned freak -- WHO THE HELL WOULD OBSESS ABOUT SNIFFING JOCKSTRAPS?

We like it when the perverts we know become a little more human. Take, for example, Dark Alley. In this outtake piece from the Tim and Roma Show, the boys in the bands (Matt von Fistenberg and Owen Hawk) discuss the trouble with models (too demanding, Hawk claims, as admits he used to be), the problems with fisting (too difficult too be spontaneous, Hawk laments), the difficulties of shooting hardcore porn over a sewing factory (too nosy about the noise, von Fistenberg grumbles) and butt plug gnomes (the nose is hard to get past, but once you reach the shoulders "you see stars," von Fistenberg grins). Gay Porn Stars: COLT Springs Eternal

"In the spring," cooed Tennyson "a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Substitute love with lust, and add in COLT's new exclusives, and you can see why. The iconic company which dominated the gay porn scene in the 60s and 70s, reinvented itself in 2003 and has been adding to its bumper crop of beefcake ever since. Gay Porn Sneak Peek: Falcon's "Longboard"

Granted an interesting debate was spurred by the last two entries (can gay porn be -- gulp -- art?!), but at risk of turning this place into a gay porn dailykos, I'm taking things in a decidedly UN-political route: An Ode to the Surfer Dude. They're too stoned to care about politics anyway.

Growing up in Miami Beach, surfers were the top of the crush food chain. And gay porn from that era was no different: Some of the biggest stars (Leo Ford, Lance, etc) looked like they got their tanned, toned bods from the beach not the gym. My number-one surfer dude crush in high school once asked me -- in earnest -- what year it was. Surfers may smoke as much pot as hippies, but they're well groomed, neatly dressed, and ooze sex.

After watching Falcon's latest, Longboard, I'm guessing director Chad Donvoan feels the same way I do. Although he's not a blond I see the same heavy-lidded dopey adorableness in cover star Derek Brodie (the latest amateur star to "go mainstream" -- I've ogled him on Jake Cruise often). The rest of the cast is rounded out quite nicely with real blonds and actual surfers, like shaggy-haired
Zackary Ryan who looks like he comes from another era.

No Respect: The Outcry Over Dark Alley's Gaytanamo

Rodney Dangerfield should have worked in pornography. The lack of respect accorded to the world's favorite film genre is profound, and as a pornographer you're less likely to find accolades outside the industry than a hooker (even one with a heart of gold) is to find love. People talk a good game, sure, but only into their tissues. But careful: show more than an intonation of violence (because there's none in other forms of popular culture) and you'll have parents protesting quicker than if it were Itchy and Scratchy or Beavis and Butthead. Make a porn set on a farm or frathouse and it's derided as filler fluff; make a porn set in a military prison and you're suddenly a baby killer.

Take the recent uproar about Dark Alley Media's recent release, Gaytanamo. When Matthias von Fistenberg and Owen Hawk first sent us the script, we thought it was clever enough to reprint (at least in part). They even got a little angry that we disclosed that it was not, in fact, filmed at a CIA black site. First, the Washington Blade picked up on the story, calling it "a new low in bad taste" then Queerty picked up the story. Suddenly there was a full backlash from porn fans across the globe who find it "inappropriate" "offensive" and "designed to capitalize on suffering." But that was only the beginning ...

Owen Hawk wrote back in protest, in brief discussing the borderland status of porn, politics of fetish (with a nod to Foucault) and the ability for things that disgust us to turn us on (and in doing so illuminate some of the reasons why the conflict exists in the first place). To which the mass of people responded (I'm summarizing) "Gimme a break -- it's just porn!"

I'll resist making the porn is art argument (primarily because I don't believe most of it is, any more than I believe television is art. This isn't to say, however, that I don't hold both in high regard or feel passionately about them because I do. But art is primarily for it's own sake and most pop culture -- including porn -- is commercial.) Porn is fun and disturbing and weird and hot -- it can elicit reactions that make you uncomfortable, it draws on the aesthetics and mood of a culture without being wholly defined by them. That's part of its beauty.

The real fascists are not the perverts in the uniforms in Gaytanamo -- they are the members of the left and right who claim that media has more power over people than people have over it. Of course, as Gaytanamo only comes out today, the deskchair quarterbacks protesting certainly haven't seen the movie but they've more than certainly decided that what it contains is either insensitive authoritarian filth or insubstantial sex fluff. Chances are that, as entertainment, it's both and neither and a whole lot more than a few zinger-friendly reductive definitions. It's insulting to the industry to claim otherwise -- and requires black-and-white standards for porn that few require of 24, All In the Family or The Sopranos.

I dunno: am I crazy for taking porn seriously or crazy for not taking it seriously enough? Or both?

Dirty, Dirty Sanchez: Anatomy of a Hustler

The slang definition of a hustler is a man who has sex for money. Gay men -- as reflected by classics like "Hustler White" and "My Own Private Idaho" -- romanticize the lone streetwalker with a heart of gold, but the word has far more insidious implications in the wider lexicon. American Heritage defines "hustler" as "a person who employs fraudulent or unscrupulous methods to obtain money".

It's certainly amusing to see gay porn star turned right-wing mouth piece Matt Sanchez/Rod Majors squirm in this hilarious interview with former "Cheaters" host Jack E. Jett, where not only does he say he doesn't remember sucking cock on film, (these should refresh your memory, hon!) but he goes so far as to espouse this hateful Ann Coutler-esque sound bite:

"Gay men are like fundamentalist Muslims. If you leave their religion they have to send out a fatwa and demand your execution."

But as it turns out, American Heritage's definition may be a more accurate way of describing Sanchez. His gay porn past and subsequent amnesia may be be the least of his problems, as he may soon be facing criminal charges for stealing from Army veterans, of all people ...

On Sunday, the Military Times reported that Sanchez is under investigation for soliciting $12,000 from private organizations -- including the New York City United War Veterans Council -- for a deployment to Iraq that he never made. Should we be surprised? A true hustler doesn't care where his money comes from: a meal ticket is a meal ticket ... whether it's a horny john he picked up on the street or a veteran.
