Gay Porn Review: Mustang Studios' Trapped

I've been in love with Mustang Studios since I was in college -- the sweaty, rough and ready butch aesthetic of Mustang has always a welcome counterpoint to the clean-cut (and shaved-down) look of the studio's parent company, Falcon Studios. Even relatively hairless releases -- like 1998's sizzling Current Affairs (with Rod Barry and Jeremy Penn) -- gave my VCR a workout.

Their newest release, Trapped 1 & 2, signals a rebirth for the studio, getting it back to its grimy roots. There's little plot for the for the hardhat-and-wife-beater'd construction workers and that's just fine. It's enough to watch former amateur hottie Brad Star piss in a watercooler, with Joey Milano on hand to drain the rest of him.

While not all construction workers feel the need to bring dildos on the job -- its supposedly for Mike Grant's wife, but it ends up in Kent Larson's buttery ass -- the toolbelt-posing is less costumey than you'd expect. It ain't Wonderland, but the big equipment on hand (freight elevators, motorcycles, Brad Star's cock) does a good job of letting you forget the manufactured nature of porno. And, at the end of a long day on the job, to lose myself a little is all I ask.

Spotlight: Mason Wyler

Rising star Mason Wyler, focus of yesterday's post on Down The Drain, gives me the perfect transition to discuss a trend I've been noticing a lot lately: Guys jumping back and forth between modeling for amateur sites and starring in big studio productions.

GayVNs: Gay Porn's Superlative Lovefest

Outside observers assume that the porn industry is only after one thing -- your money. But the rise in popularity -- with both porn consumers and producers -- is a testament to industry's maturation. The release of the GayVN Award noms earlier this week -- and the cock comparisons that soon followed -- show an increasing number of studios are as interested in popular and critical acclaim as they are cash.

Of course, with award season comes boasting. Press releases for new films frequently tout their film as the director's "best ever," or the studio's "biggest release yet," to a degree that borders on comic. In the past year I've heard about 'the most expensive porn ever made,' or 'the largest production ever staged' or, merely, the most successful porn film ever. Films are routinely "historic," productions "Hollywood quality." Now, there have been some amazing productions this year, but the endless hype can devalue the linguistic currency.

The average week brings ten new movies -- it's a lot of porn to watch, so you can't really blame producers are marshalling all their superlatives. But it doesn't mean all films are equal (we do, after all fully deserve to win Best Screenplay), we just need to start articulating better what makes them so good. As we approach the GayVN Awards (March 9, West Hollywood), we'll review some of our favorite moments from the 2005 year in porn. Here are the nominees:
