2004 Grabbys Announced
The 2004 Grabby Award winners were announced tonight and is it just me or do they look a lot like the 2004 GayVN Award winners?
I really do think Mike Soldier is a terrific actor, but does he need a Best Actor GayVN and Grabby for his performance in "A Porn Star is Born"? Is there enough room on Wash West's mantle for two Best Director trophies? And why do neither give out an award for Best Powerbottom, (Carlos Morales, hands down).
Furthermore, does anyone else find it odd that Tag Adams won the Best Newcomer Grabby (and was also nominated for "Best Newcomer" at this year's GayVNs) even though Billy's Tale was released in 1994?

Dean Phoenix: Rising from the Asses

Gay porn on Swedish TV
A couple of months ago, two Swedes named Filip and Fredrik hijacked our Wet Palms casting session to film their show "High Chaparral."
Their show is sort sort of a "Jackass"-style look at American culture, with Filip and Frederick usually being the butt of the joke as they interview off-beat and past-their-prime celebs like Tanya Harding, Vince Neil, and Corey Feldman. This one episode was all about gay porn and focused on us as we tried to find performers for the gay porn soap opera.
We set out that day to have a serious casting session and a bunch of porn stars showed up to read for roles, but having the Swedes there asking them to read out things in Swedish really threw everyone for a loop. It was pretty chaotic, but fun none the less.

Movie of the Week: 2nd Gear (2002)

In 2002 my best friend and longtime creative partner, Jack, proposed I move back to San Francisco from New York. His suggestion – that we to focus our collective energy in the gay porn industry -– has proved both more challenging and more rewarding than either of us could have imagined.
People often say to me, "Porn doesn't do it for me." They find porn too bland, too forced or too plastic or too "_____" for them to enjoy. These conscientious objectors cite unrealistic body types, clone-ification and other supposed aesthetic demons of the gay adult underworld. Like someone whose opposition to television betrays his ignorance, this excuse for not watching porn is threadbare and uninventive.
It stuns me, because if they might as well be spouting the rhetoric of the far Right, treating pornography as an undifferentiated cultural product. In fact, this type of thinking has hampered any serious approach to the medium. The variety of men -- “real men” in modern anti-porn parlance -- has never been greater. You just need to know where to look.
The amount of gay content -- the sheer number of films available -- has skyrocketed in the past decade. Amateur -- once a small sliver of locally traded home films -- has swallowed nearly 20 percent of the market. Fetish films as well have found modern distribution channels and flourished. Meanwhile, the big studios have upped the ante considerably -- raising production values and experimenting with a wider variety of acts and actors.
It may seem like a pathetic pun, but in all sincerity, it’s an exciting time for the gay porn industry. And Jack and I look forward to editing this fine journal (kudos to Mark Kliem for developing and helping define this site) in the year to come.

Movie of the Week: "The Bigger the Better"
This Matt Sterling classic is arguably the best gay porn flick ever made. More specifically, it's the second scene, where not-so-apt pupil Rick Donovan overpowers his teacher, Matt Ramsey, with his massive cock, and manages to fuck two insanely voluminous, over-the-shoulder loads from the eager bottom.
