Athletic Model Guild, Historic Studio Sold: 1,000,000 male physique photos and films to be preserved

El Cerrito, California � March 31, 2004: �The preservation of nearly one million negatives, slides and movies, which represent almost 60 years of the history of all-male erotica, was assured today by the acquisition of Athletic Model Guild (AMG) of Los Angeles by Dennis Bell of El Cerrito California. �Bell purchased the entire estate of Bob Mizer, founder of AMG, for an undisclosed sum and will reform the company. He plans to manage, market and preserve one of the most outstanding collections of all-male physique photography and film production in the world. ��Bob Mizer can rest easy knowing that his work will be preserved, his films will continue to be released in new media formats and the studio he founded will continue to produce new material,� said Bell, a well known physique photographer in his own right (DennisBellPhoto.com), and owner of PosingStrap.com �and PhysiqueLibrary.com, two sites that specialize in vintage collections of physique photography.

AMG was founded in 1945 by Bob Mizer. �Now an icon of gay history, Mizer was a trailblazer in fighting the strict censorship laws of the mid twentieth century which permitted female, but not male, nudity in photography. �Since Mizer�s death twelve years ago, the slides, negatives and other assets of his estate have been in the custody of Wayne Stanley, one of Mizer�s legal advisers and friends. �During that time, licenses have been given periodically to publish, reproduce, sell or exhibit some of Mizer�s work. �The commercial release of the mainstream film Beefcake introduced Mizer and his work to millions of moviegoers. �But for thousands of service men and others, Mizer was no stranger. ��Soldiers, sailors and marines knew that if they came through Hollywood, they could pick up an extra fifty bucks by posing for Bob� said Bell. �In addition, Mizer photographed thousands of gay and straight men of all descriptions. �His subjects included motion picture and television actors, waiters, motorcyclists, college men, construction workers, California surfer boys and mid-Western farm hands just �off the bus� and searching for fame and fortune in Hollywood.

�Bob Mizer�s photographs span the entire gamut of masculinity,� says Bell, �and the alphabet as well � from George Abagian to Dick Ziglar. �There were names we may recognize: TV Star Glenn Corbett went on to star in 77 Sunset Strip after Bob photographed him; Ed Fury was in a number of films and TV shows (24 according to www.imdb.com ); Dick Dubois was pictured in Life magazine as a member of the Las Vegas cast of Mae West�s show. Estimates are that Bob photographed more than 10,000 men over his forty-five year career.�

Bell has the difficult but enviable task now of cataloguing the negatives, prints and slides. ��I expect it will take three years or more,� Bell adds. �It will be a massive undertaking to assure these irreplaceable treasures and relics of gay history and male photography are preserved and treated with the respect they deserve.�

Well, Mark, here's the downright or upright truth, whichever position you prefer.... hehe
I was in San Diego, until recently. I was working for Washington Mutual for a couple years as a loan processor til I had moved to Denver on Christmas last year. Haven't bartended in a couple years..........I'm thinking people really haven't been updated since I've been out of the biz for quite awhile.
I moved out here to do Residential Construction til my knee blew out, so now I am working for BOYS NEXT DOOR as a Booking Manager til I recover from knee surgery. I've been doing dance gigs nationwide, (shouldn't be on my knees til after the surgery, but gotta pay the doc)- don't take that literally, wouldn't want to add insult to injury. ")
I may do a return................but it's under wraps at the moment. So, right now, I'm finding alot of new talent and getting there feet wet and having them join our team..........it's been alot of fun, getting back in touch with the people I haven't talked to in years.

Do you know about Margaret Cho? If you're gay (or gay-adjacent) and you read this column, I can't imagine you don't. Her Web site is www.margaretcho.com and recently she began keeping a blog. It rocks. Go read every word on it. Margaret Cho is a fan of gay porn in a major way. Two years ago, when I did time in a publishing penal colony, I came very close to arranging for Ms. Cho to interview Jeff Stryker. It didn't happen for whatever reason, but it would have been fun to read, eh?

Jeff Stryker recently sent Ms. Cho his action figure. (By the way, Mr. Stryker is online at www.jeff-stryker.com.) Quoted below is what Ms. Cho had to say about His Largeness. It's another reason why, although we have never met, I love Margaret Cho more than luggage. It deserves to be reprinted for a larger audience. Even if you think she's full of sawdust, you have to respect her sincerity. Wrapping up the GAYVN coverage... A lesser-known tidbit is that emcee Chi Chi LaRue had been discharged from Cedars Sinai two days before hosting the GAYVNs. S/he had just spent five days in the hospital undergoing a "procedure" (her term) on her heart. We met for lunch in West Hollywood recently where we sexually harassed the hot waiters and caught up on recent events, including her heart surgery.

"I went to the doctor's for a checkup," Ms. LaRue explains, "they did some tests, then came back and told me they had to do some other tests. Then my doctor told me to check into the hospital right away." It turns out the tests had uncovered an arterial blockage in Ms. LaRue's heart. A "stint" was inserted into the clogged artery to increase blood flow (similar to an angioplasty in which a balloon is used to expand the artery) and after several days' recovery in a hospital bed, the directrix was sent home.

"I have to take a month off and sit around," she says, "which is hard. Very hard. I had to cancel a lot of stuff, including a huge Rascal Video shoot with twenty-one boys! But to their credit, every single one of them said, 'No problem. Chi Chi has to get better.' I really appreciate that. Not a single one of them complained about getting their money or anything. That means a lot to me."

She is now on a strict diet, working with a trainer, and slowing down — just a bit. "I have some conflicted feelings about letting go of some of the stuff I had planned. It's been rough. But on the other hand, I feel one hundred percent better. I mean, [enough] blood is actually flowing to parts of my body for the first time! I feel better than I have in years."

And she's also happy to dispute a few rumors that naturally swirled around her hospital stay. "I didn't have my legs amputated due to diabetes," she told me as she dramatically rolled her eyes. "I did not collapse anywhere or grab my heart and fall over. I went to the doctor's office for a checkup and he discovered the problem there. And I did not overdose on cocaine. Please, girl!"

At the end of March, Ms. LaRue and entourage will board an airplane for Germany and a Rascal Video International shoot. "Look, my doctor told me I dodged a bullet. And he's right. If this hadn't happened when it did, next week I would have been having a heart attack on an airplane, flying over the ocean. This was a wake-up call, a huge one. And I heard it!"

How to say "You're fat" in 200 words �

The obligations of a porn star to his public are simple. First, he must maintain an impeccable or virtually flawless body, as judged by a reasonable person of average sensibilities. Second, the porn star must have acted on film with the intent to cause sexual stimulation or with regard of the probability that such stimulation would occur. Finally, no claim to porn stardom exists unless the porn star�s penis is distinguishable in length, girth, stamina, capability or other characteristic commonly used in conjunction with the assessment of male genitalia.

Rarely will a legal claim for breach of contract present such clear-cut evidence of actual violation as that of Billy Brandt, a Falcon Studios porn star who sustained injuries from a serious automobile accident in 2003. In my judgment, Brandt has failed to make good on his binding mutual promise to perform as a porn star under the aforementioned obligations. Brandt would have us find that a State�s interest in protecting a physically injured yet contractually bound individual is sufficient to deny protection to the public from unfit, unshaven and otherwise unappealing porn stars. This I decline to do.

All Worlds Video, which had the most nominations (19) going into the show, also led the studios in number of awards won. Five of its seven trophies are for "There Goes the Neighborhood" which won in the Best Comedy, Screenplay (Rick Tugger), Music (Gian Franco), Non-Sex (Rowdy Carson), and Supporting Actor (Brad Benton) categories. All Worlds' two other awards are for Best Ethnic-Themed Video ("Sins of the Father"), and Best Director, Bisexual Video (Dirk Yates).

Jason Ridge was voted Best Newcomer and Joe Foster was named Performer of the Year.

The evening's one tie was in the Best All-Sex Video category. The winners are Titan Media's "Gorge" and Sarava Productions' "Bone Island."

Titan Media movies, "Gorge" and "Carny," won a total of five awards. In addition to the All-Sex trophy, Gorge director and cinematographer Bruce Cam was also honored in the Best Videography category. "Carny" won for Best Art Direction, Packaging, and DVD Extras.

Michael Soldier was named Best Actor for his performance in Raging Stallion Studios' "A Porn Star Is Born." Peter Raeg, Michael Vincenzo, and Shane Rollins won Best Threesome trophies in another Raging Stallion title, "Gay Dreams."

Tag Adams and Chad Hunt's scene in "Detention" (Rascal Video-Channel 1 Releasing) took Best Sex Scene honors. The Best Group Scene award went to "Detention's" big classroom orgy.

Lane Fuller and Brad Patton got the Best Oral Scene nod in Falcon Studios' "Drenched 1." Falcon also won in the Best Classic DVD category for "The Other Side of Aspen 2." Hot House Entertainment titles "Skuff 2" and "Mo' Bubble Butt" were named Best Leather Video and Best Specialty Release. Bel Ami received awards for Best DVD ("Just for Fun") and Solo Video ("Boy Watch 4").

Oh Man! International's "Legionnaires" was voted Best Foreign Release, Rad Video's "American Way 3: Love" took the Best Specialty Release (18-23) award, Male Media One's "Bisexual Houseguest" won in the Bisexual Video category, "Mykonos: LKP Casting 3" (Lucas Kazan Productions) won for Best Amateur Video, and Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions also was awarded the Alternative Video trophy for "The Agony of Ecstasy."

Colt Studio's "Reload" was named Best Renting Tape of the Year.

Performers Tom Chase and Kurt Young, videographer Todd Montgomery, and filmmakers-editors Barry Knight and Russell Moore were inducted into the GayVN Hall of Fame in a special presentation by Gino Colbert.

The awards show, attended by nearly 300 gay XXX industry guests, was held at Rage nightclub in West Hollywood, California.

Prior to host Chi Chi LaRue taking the stage, a filmed welcome was shown on the club's big screens in which one of the famous drag queen's nipples was exposed, in a parody of the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction," to the great delight of the crowd.

I have been fortunate to receive a few awards in my lifetime, and I always appreciate them, but I must say that this is a very special one because the gay community has supported me from the very beginning. I know that this is a challenging moment in your history. So I am very proud to accept this award from the Human Rights Campaign at this time. You are on the frontlines in the struggle for equal rights, even as continued prejudice stands in the way.
The American Constitution is a magical document that has evolved over 200 plus years. While we revere it, it did not start out as a perfect document. This Republic was founded with a Constitution that counted slaves as three-fifths human. It took decades and a Civil War, the deadliest inU.S.history, to erase that stain upon our country. It took over 100 years to bring women into the political system by giving them the right to vote. Interracial marriage was illegal in some states until 1967. Now the Bush Administration wants to change the positive inclusive direction of our Constitution by calling for an amendment that authorizes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Well, I say, no way. Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that the arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice. We must always go forward, towards greater liberty and greater equality, not backward.

You know, for me, the realization that two people should have the right to form a sacred union regardless of their gender was strengthened when I saw a performance of the playThe Normal Heart in 1985. After feeling the love those two men had for each other, I dare anybody not to want them to get married by the end.

The law cannot dictate matters of the heart. When two people form a deep bond, there is usually a soul connection, and the soul has no gender. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are fundamental rights in this country. Happiness can be many things - a good meal, a good friend, a warm puppy, and certainly...love. How can anyone legislate who you can love? That is a human right, the right to love and be loved.
And when you love someone, whether you're in a heterosexual or same-gender relationship, shouldn't you be able to visit them in the hospital when they're sick or dying? Shouldn't everyone have the right to enter into a loving, legally binding, committed relationship that takes on special responsibilities and obligations?
Current civil union legislation doesn't go far enough in protecting equal rights. We must not deny gay f amilies many of the benefits that help keep families strong...social security, pensions, veteran's support, inheritance, the right to take unpaid leave to care for a spouse...the list goes on and on.
Instead of helping families, this president wants to spend a billion and a half dollars to bolster marriage. Turning government into a marriage counselor is a joke...a waste of time and money. It's not a policy; it's a diversion.
But this administration regularly uses the politics of diversion to their advantage. They cleverly use divisive cultural issues to avoid talking about other serious problems, such as unemployment and healthcare. They go after Saddam because they can't find bin Ladin ... They want to send missions to Mars instead of protecting the Earth... Tax cuts for the wealthy instead of assisting the poor...
You have to look at what Bush does, not what he says. Talk is cheap. He expresses empathy for military families and then cuts their benefits...He names a propo sal "The Clear Skies Initiative" that pollutes the planet...He says he'll be a uniter and then drives us apart...He steals the slogan "No Child Left Behind" and then breaks his promise to fund his reforms.
Truly, I stand here flabbergasted at what is going on in today's world. Never in my life have I witnessed a president and an administration that is so out of step with the needs of the country, so threatening to our future and so abusive in its use of power.
TheClintonadministration left this country with a budget surplus, and also a surplus in the goodwill we shared with our allies. Now we have a deficit in both.
Before the war inIraq, I went to hear Scott Ritter speak - he had been a weapons inspector for seven years. He told us there was no imminent threat to theUnited States, that the program to develop nuclear weapons had been dormant since 1998. There was no connection between Iraq and al Qaeda (one is a secular society and the other fundamentalist), that chemical weapons have a short shelf life and wouldn't be usable today...in short, everything Scott Ritter told us has turned out to be the truth.
But this president (the only one to cut taxes during a war) made terrorism a partisan cause. He charged Democrats wi th being soft on terror, a lie. He appointed John Ashcroft to trample our civil liberties as Attorney General, and, from a human rights point of view, his use ofGuantanamoBayhas roused international protest.
Now as the president gears up for his re-election campaign, the right wing propaganda machine is ready to take the skin off of John Kerry, the Democratic Party's nominee. I've never seen anything as ruthless or as relentless as this. They can take a slur hatched at the Republican National Committee or a lie huckstered by the Heritage Foundation, repeat it on Fox, hit it on Limbaugh, print it in the Wall Street Journal, until it's coming out of every media outlet imaginable. Repeating lies over and over doesn't make them any more true. But it does make people believe the lies a little more until finally they stop demanding the truth.
I've seen their ferocity up close, as I witnessed the astounding assault on the CBS movie about Ronald Reagan, in which my husband starred and Craig and Neil produced. They attacked that movie and drove it off network television before any of them had ever seen it.
The Right Wing is very well-organized. They fight dirty. They project their own nastiness onto their opposition. Remember how they accused the Democrats of stealing the election inFlorida, while they themselves were doing just that!
We're now in a period that whenever you say something that's critical of the government, you are accused of being unpatriotic. Bush even lent himself to an utterly despicable campaign in Georgia that impugned the patriotism of Senator Max Cleland, who had sacrificed three limbs in the same Vietnam War that the president ducked. Talking about patriotism, let's never forget Bush's fellow Republican, Teddy Roosevelt, who in 1918 said, "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
Indeed, this country now faces a fundamental choice. Multilateral security or pre-emptive wars. Closing or widening the gaps between the haves and the have nots. Facing the truth or accepting the lie s. The public taking an interest or tuning out. Extending our rights or turning them back.
Mr. Bush will dress himself up as a compassionate conservative once more for the election, but he has embraced a remarkably radical policy, which I pray the public finally sees. The mishandling of national and economic security. The shameless politics of special interests and crony capitalists. (And when you talk about special interests it's important to differentiate between public interests that benefit the larger good of the people, like protecting the environment or finding a cure for cancer, versus the special interests that are limited to a particular industry or corporation, like Enron or Halliburton).
Bush recently pushed through a prescription drug bill that actually gives a better deal to the drug companies than to the seniors who need the drugs. And what about the new energy plan that actually increases our dependence onPersian Gulfoil (even though he recently said just the opposite in his State of the Union speech).
The Republicans will try to win the election by convincing the American public that they are the father figures who can keep us safe. But the facts contradict the myth. Two and a half years after the largest attack on American soil, our borders remain easily penetrable. We have the capacity to inspect only 2% of cargo containers coming into our country. Local law enforcement has been weakened by spending cuts, and our intelligence lacks manpower and updated technology. And which party's budget provides the most for homeland security? The Democrats!
This president is so transparent. The only way he would agree to investigations of the mishandling of intelligence leading up to the Iraqi war, is if we wait until after the election to get the reports. Has this administration no shame? What job are we not doing that has allowed them to pull the wool over the eyes of the American people?
But...there is hope. It's starting to turn. I can feel it. The media is finally asking the president and his staff the tougher questions, and looking into the issues that should have been investigated years ago. The people are speaking out at all levels from the grassroots toWashington. All of the good work so many people are doing is finally making a dent. We won't be scared into submission.

What should scare us is that we have no checks and balances on this administration. They control the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court. Allwe have is each other. So each of us must do what we can to create positive change in November. I know the Human Rights Campaign will be at the center of the struggle for equality. And let's be smart...Let's be pragmatic...Let's not allow the Republicans to use gay marriage as a political tool in this election year. Truth and justice eventually wins out.
I am proud to stand with you tonight as the recipient of this prestigious award. Together wecan and wewill win the fight

Hello. Do you know of a cross-referenced database of gay porn? That is, one where I could put in a name and get out a filmography, or vis-versa? It'd be better if it included information about the different movies (year, studio, how it rates, etc). Thanks for your help.

Just wondering, with all your porn expertise, if you have any info on
whatever happened to two 1980s porn stars. The first is Todd Baron, who
appeared in one of Falcon's first videos, titled "Style". It was his only
film as far as I know. Co-starred with Ron Pearson, Leo Ford and Tim
Kramer. Al Parker directed. Todd is on the boxcover. I remember thinking
he was just the hottest sexiest thing I'd ever seen when I was a teenager.
Got off on him over and over again.

The second "whatever happened to" is Shawn Michaels, who appeared in "Getting It", a valley boys tale about a party in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley
in the mid-80s. A Bijou/Jocks video directed by Philip St. John, with Jim
Bentley, Rick Donovan, Jon King and Matt Ramsey, among others. I think the
film was remade as "Getting It At The Rave", though Shawn Michaels was not
in the remake.

Just wondering if you know the scoop. Hope they're both living high on the
hog with the man of their dreams somewhere.
