Falcon's Big Timber
Last night I watched Big Timber from Falcon Studios. It's a recent 2003 release starring one of my dreamboats, Josh Weston.
I've been reviewing a lot of movies and Banana Guide, and I thought I'd "seen it all", particularly in story lines, but I'd never seen this topic covered before. Big Timber took a bit of a political bent in that it concerns a group of environmental activists that chain themselves to redwood trees to prevent the butch lumberjacks from chopping them down. The dialogue at the beginning was kinda clever with a bit of irony thrown in, but I was hoping for more political fireworks to wrap it up at the end.
Big Timber also stars Clay Maverick, Leo Bramm, Justin Dragon, Joe Foster, Jack Ryan, Trey Rexx, Brad Benton, Jerek, Paul Johnson, and Ross Stuart.
I really liked Big Timber, but given the choice between the Sierra Club Sissies and the butch lumberjacks, I'll take the loggers, especially after seeing the 3-way with Clay Maverick, Jack Ryan and Justin Dragon in the back of a truck.

Michael Lucas
Russian-born porn star, director and studio boss Michael Lucas has been getting a lot of attention lately. Besides this item from today's "Adams Report" by J.C. Adams:
As for director-performer Michael Lucas, our conversation was wide-ranging. But he did reveal that he was leaving a few days later for the Middle East. Mr. Lucas has been invited to perform October 31st at Luna Club in Haifa, Israel and at TLV in Tel Aviv on November 7th. Luna Club is on the Web at www.luna.luvs.it/. TLV is Israel's newest and largest supper-club.
In a statement, Mr. Lucas said, "I'm very proud and excited to go to [Israel]. I feel privileged to be invited, and I feel proud to be able to provide them with entertainment during this difficult time."
About the country, Lucas says he's never visited but has "always dreamed of going, especially since I come from a Jewish background; since I was raised in the U.S.S.R. it was difficult for men to be circumcised there, and my parents didn't want to make my life more difficult in such an anti-Semitic country as Russia, so that's why I'm not cut."
I asked about security concerns. "I won't be taking public transportation," he told me. "I will take all the necessary precautions. But there are five or six million people there who are just living their daily lives. They want to forget their troubles and be entertained, just like in this country."
Lucas Entertainment has HUNT & PLUNGE WITH CHAD HUNT now in release, in which Mr. Lucas interviews the mega-endowed Chad Hunt, whom he discovered, in-between scenes from Hunt's various films for Lucas (two new scenes are also included). On this slow news week, who should take umbrage over my item in the View last week in which I referred to Jeff Stryker as the King of Porn, but the new self-proclaimed King, Jeff Palmer. Foot Fetish
Feet have been one of the topics of the week. In preparation for Halloween, some of my drag queen friends have been emailing back and forth about shopping for ladies shoes, converting men's sizes to women's, heel height vs. comfort, etc.
Drag newbies take note: the rule of thumb for average width feet is take your men's size and add two to choose a pair in ladies size. For example, if you wear size 10 men's, buy a lady's 12. Unfortunately, most stores only go to ladies 10. Payless has some styles in 12, but you can't you expect much fabulousness from Payless. Star Jones is their spokesmodel, for god sakes!
Also, foot width is a factor, too. You've GOT to try them on because size varies drastically. I am very particular with shoe size, especially with men's shoes because I want to be comfortable ALL the time. I never know whether to choose 11, 11.5, or 12 to get the right fit. With ladies shoes, if you're going for cute, forget any illusions about comfort. Big heels are always painful - deal with it.
For Halloweeners and In-Betweeners, plan ahead to do the minimum amount of walking and standing in heels. Choose cab (or limo!) transportation that will drop you off at the door of your destination, rather than parking three blocks away or taking a bus that might drop you off even further.

I've been thinking about shoes, too. Did I tell you I'm spending Halloween in New Orleans? One of the issues on my mind is my favorite pair of everyday sneakers seems to have metal in the soles, which sets off the alarm at the airport every time. I decided I want to avoid the embarrassment this time so I am opting for different travel footware.
I am also going to dig out my vintage 70's men's orange and brown platform wingtips to go with my orange, yellow, green, pink and gold paisley bellbottom nun outfit. (Did you get all that?)
Speaking of foot fetishes, are there really people that get sexually aroused by feet, or is it just a safer sex substitute for the real thing? I tend to believe the later, but watch these movies and tell me what you think.

Colt Studio Spotlight
Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the new San Francisco offices of Colt Studio and met with John Rutherford, the new owner of Colt and former president of Falcon Studios. In a unique coincidence, the new Colt office is in the same building (one floor below) that housed Falcon for many years in the 1990's. Now that the dust has settled, both companies are on their own paths to the porn future, so I thought this would be a good time to interview Mr. Rutherford to find out his plans, and re-trace how he got to this point.
Rutherford said, "It all started about a year ago with Falcon lifetime exclusive Tom Chase. Tom has become more interested in bodybuilding and less and less interested in performing in movies, but he asked for permission to appear in a Colt movie." Rutherford encouraged Chase to take the offer from Colt because he felt that, at the time, Colt was not in competition with Falcon.
Through Tom Chase's association with Colt, Rutherford got wind that Colt was for sale. "I initially thought Colt would be a good property for Falcon to purchase, but when I presented the idea to the board of directors, they turned down the idea," said Rutherford. Then in November 2002 Colt founder and chief creative force, Jim French, requested a meeting with Rutherford. The two had never met and Rutherford was honored with the invitation.
In the meantime, John Rutherford was feeling unhappy with his role at Falcon. "After being involved in 280 movies and spending most of my career in a creative capacity, I found I was becoming more and more involved in adminstration and less and less involved in creative aspects." In March of 2003 Rutherford dropped a bombshell that he was giving notice with no real plans of what to do next. "I probably would have just done my own 'John Rutherford' line of videos once in a while right out of my garage." It was after he left his employer of 14 years that the idea of owning Colt Studio came into being.
The move from LA to San Francisco carrying a body of work spanning 36 years was arduous, but had it's comic elements, too. "Of the 4 trucks used, one got stopped by the cops on I-5 for being overloaded in the back. The police made them shift the contents to balance the load, causing everything to topple over. Photos, flyers, papers all went flying! Some gay guys happened to be around and recognized it was Colt material!"
As for Rutherford's plans, he will be concentrating on shooting new productions in the Colt style. Jim French is still shooting still photography, and Colt will continue producing videos through it's various lines: Colt, Buckshot, Minutemen, Spurs, and Colt International. John also has plans to introduce a new line of videos called Pony Studios featuring Colt men 18-22 years old.
We spent a good deal of time discussing the incredible body of work in the Colt archive. A total of 70 titles exist, but only 30% have been transferred to DVD, so expect more to come. Rutherford feels a "responsibility" in preserving this material for future generations and "treating with respect". It seems a firm plan for the vintage Colt material has not been decided yet, and won't be until it's properly reviewed and catalogued. Unlike Rutherford, Jim French's passion was more on still photography than video, which gets lends itself perfectly to being showcased in the membership section of their website www.coltstudio.com.

MythBuster Babes
I "discovered" a new show last night on, where else, the Discovery Channel called Myth Busters. The premise is they take famous urban myths and test them out scientifically to decide once and for all if the myth could possibly be true. Last night's episode discussed the old myths of the dog exploding in a microwave, whether a penny dropped from the Empire State Building could kill a pedestrian, and whether or not Lucille Ball picked up radio signals in her teeth fillings that uncovered a Japanese spy transmitter during WWII - go figure. (You'll have to watch the show to find out which is true or false!)
Well, anyway, the two hosts of the show, Jamie and Adam somehow looked familiar. Both are the type I'd expect to see at Lazy Bear Weekend or certainly at the local San Francisco bear-bar, the Lone Star. Beret-wearing Jamie has a very stoic attitude and deep, deep sexy daddy voice, where red headed flat topped Adam is the more talkative and flamboyant of the two, and in his bio describes him as a "thing-maker". I could name several of my faggy friends as "MISS Thing Makers".
Inititially, I was interested in the subject matter of the show after just having watched two porn sci-fi mad scientist movies, Millenium Men and Technical Ecstasy. But then I noticed, hey, these bearcubs are kinda sexy in a geeky kind of way!
I did some research, and it seems Adam and Jamie own a special effects company right here in San Francisco called M5 Industries that creates gadgets and puppets for movies and commercials, and their studio is located on Potrero Hill, one of the lesser gay neighborhoods.
As I continued watching, they went on location to tanning salon. Seems they tape the show in San Francisco, and of all the tanning salons to visit in SF, they chose Sorrento Tan, a salon right in the Castro! hmmm. You know, it's the one with the blue awning that faces the Gay Gay Gay Gold's Gym? But wait, the next stop was Friedman's Microwave store, also in the Castro and conveniently located right next door to Eros, the gay bath house!
An "aha" moment? Maybe. Except for the Burning Man picture above with the boys trying to look butch, one look at the pictures below tell all you need to know.

John Holmes
In the next few months you are going to be hearing a lot about the deceased porn star John Holmes. They will soon release a new Hollywood blockbuster starring Val Kilmer as Holmes.
In his day, John Holmes was a legend in straight porn as one of the few males who had a name. His claim to fame was certainly not his face or body, but for size-queens (and there a lot of them) he was the man. As his career dwindled, John Holmes got involved in drugs and ran with a bad crowd, and eventually got into gay porn because no one else would pay him. He even got tied into a murder scandal, which is the basis of the Val Kilmer movie.
Eventually, John Holmes died of AIDS.

Arnold / Mapplethorpe Connection
At first I thought it was a joke, but what the hell, The Dream Team is just for fun anyway. The monthly selection of Dream Team member is usually latest pornstar-of-the-moment, but for a laugh, they picked someone who hasn't actually done porn (at least, not that we know of...), but there are plenty of nude shots of him floating around. This month's NakedSword Dream Team member is none other than Governor-Elect Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Okay, so Arnold is the American success story, right? Hmmm. There have always been lingering rumors about how this immigrant bodybuilder REALLY went from bricklayer to the next level with "a little help". The business of bodybuilding, especially in the late 60's, was rather seedy, and hello!, obviously fueled by support from GAY men. It's not inconceivable that young, hunky Arnold may have gotten or given "favors" from horny gay admirers. Even with his big aspirations, he chose to pose nude when he needed money. Besides his wildly distributed shots from After Dark Magazine (a blatantly gay publication that never actually used the "g" word) there is supposedly a series of Robert Mapplethorpe photos that are being kept under wraps because they may be scandalous.

Matt Drudge, on his Drudge Report, says that "voters have never seen an elected official in such detail."
Although copies of a benign nude photo of the bodybuilder-actor-politician that appeared in the 1970s publican After Dark have been circulating for months on the internet, the Mapplethorpe photos are reportedly "shocking".
In a world exclusive, Drudge reports that pictures so steamy they have been kept under lock at the New York Estate of Mapplethorpe who died in 1989.
The potential scandal heated up at the end of September when sex/porn scholar, Jack Fritcher posted a 9-piece collection of Arnold items on EBay. Fritscher was one of Mapplethorpe's fuck buddies back in the day, and offered for sale among other items a postcard with one of Mapplethorpe's photos of Arnold that is an invitation, handwritten in black ink by Robert Mapplethorpe, to a “Hot Dirty Man” sex party at 652 Hudson Street, with arrival “required before 11:30" when the doors closed. One of Fritscher's less scholarly endeavors was producing a fascinating series of "amateur" videos for his company Palm Drive at a time way, way before the genre became trendy. Most titles are available on NakedSword, including Police Bodybuilding 1, Police Bodybuilding 2, and Muscle and Sand, all featuring unauthorized filming of public bodybuilding contests.
Dream Team or not, I think there is going to be more to this story, even if the "story" is about the supression of the real story.

Item #2. The next very personal item (which was given directly to me by Mapplethorpe) is extremely rare, and, after all these years, probably one of a kind. It is an original Schwarzenegger-Mapplethorpe photo postcard, approximately 3x5, featuring a black-and-white photograph of Arnold titled: Robert Mapplethorpe “Torso” 1978. Arnold’s 240 pounds appear in a 5-ounce posing brief artfully tinted a subdued red. (Do the math!) The postcard is surrounded by a red border. (The photo was exhibited at the Smithsonian in 1978.) On the reverse side of this historical card from the wild “Titanic 1970s” is an invitation, handwritten in black ink by Robert Mapplethorpe, to a “Hot Dirty Man” sex party at 652 Hudson Street, with arrival “required before 11:30" when the doors closed. The postcard, signifying Arnold’s gay sex appeal, is in excellent condition. (Mapplethorpe, his own work expensively valued by collectors, died from AIDS in 1989. This Mapplethorpe postcard written in his own hand is, on its own, unique and extremely valuable.)
Item #3. Here is the soul of this 4-piece Schwarzenegger Shrine. I am also including from my personal collection my VERY RARE AND VERY COLLECTIBLE FEBRUARY, 1977, ISSUE OF AFTER DARK MAGAZINE. I have carefully stored this 26-year-old treasure to keep it in excellent condition. The photo layout features 22 photographs (including the full-color cover of Arnold) selected by After Dark who combined the very exhibitionist photos for maximum sex appeal to its gay demographic.
Two color photos shot by George Butler are outstanding CANDID NUDE PORTRAITS in the frank style of the free-wheeling 1970s:
1) a color FULL-FRONTAL NUDE of Arnold Schwarzenegger and
2) a color NUDE BUTT-SHOT taken from Arnold’s left side.
The photo layout’s 22 photographs, some of them full page, include, as mentioned, the full-color cover “selling” a very tasty beefcake photograph of Arnold shot by Jack Mitchell. Inside, another large photo drips with After Dark’s layer of come-and-get-it, because it reveals Arnold sitting alone in a very huge bed wearing, on a ribbon, a gold medal resting in the cleavage between the mounds of his naked chest.
In another iconically gay-friendly photo of “3-way” geometry shot in the style of the Joffrey Ballet, Arnold at the gym stands bent over from the waist, resting on his elbows, with bodybuilders Ken Waller and Denny Gable sitting on his back. (Gable appeared in the movie, Sextette, with Mae West.) In my analysis of what was once a legit work-out combo, it is as if the two handsome men are 450 pounds mounted astraddle a muscular Harley motorcycle. (Arnold is famous for playing “machines” in movies.) The strawberry-blond Waller’s legs virtually sandwich Arnold’s head. Gable sits behind Waller, his inner thighs “wish-boning” Waller’s rear, with his hands on Waller’s waist. (In 1970, in the iron pit at Muscle Beach, Venice, California, I shot several 35mm color slides of longtime work-out partners Schwarzenegger and Waller, but those are not included in this package.)
In another After Dark shot, Arnold is reclined, like painter Ingres’ Grande Odalisque, toward the camera in what can only be reviewed in a randy gay magazine as “a delirious shoulder-and-pec-loaded crotch shot.”
Yet another gorgeous photo, formally posed by Arnold and formally composed by Pumping Iron’s George Butler, glorifies Arnold standing majestically outdoors (in the “archer” pose) with three young black adolescents sitting, I myself think, very Suddenly Last Summer at his feet; one reaches his hand up to the top of Arnold’s striated thigh.
As a sidebar: In keeping with the subtly erotic messages of After Dark magazine, two of the group physique-contest photos, and one other photo, also show another attractive bodybuilder, [name omitted out of fair play], who allegedly early on, frankly and rather famously, appeared in at least one gay underground film about a muscular priest’s desire for a muscular manly Jesus.
(Note: I imply nothing about the personal sexual preference of any man mentioned here. Over the years, many straight bodybuilders have appeared in gay-themed erotic films, usually as the untouchable object of desire. Nor am I mentioning the long list of prematurely dead bodybuilders–for instance, Gable, the Mentzer brothers–done in allegedly by steroids, the most popular drug of choice among many bodybuilders in the 1970s. Two more color photographs of Arnold by Jack Mitchell are particularly appealing in their youthful innocence.
One is a full body, double-biceps shot.
The second is an incredibly penetrating close up of a very young Arnold’s boyishly sweet and athletic face which comes across quite creamy-lipped, succulent, and different from the face of the gubernatorial candidate.
Each photo is outstanding in itself. Yet, in a very hot way, the photos are tweaked by the gay-culture mystique of the After Dark layout which loads them with innuendo Arnold may not have intended, but his publicity handlers could hardly have ignored–and probably even courted–in the photos’ essential appeal to the “queer eye for the straight guy.”
There is also a 4-page article wherein Arnold is interviewed about his “father’s footsteps” among other topics he addresses frankly..
Item #4. Here is a real Arnold treasure. This is a rare studio-bound copy of the shooting script for Conan the Barbarian,” the screenplay written by John Milius, marked, “Third Draft.” I believe it to be a studio-produced photocopied shooting script, 468 shots, in 120 pages. The cover is clear plastic; the back is black leatherette stock. Interestingly, unlike the final edit of the film, this version of the shooting script does not have a voice-over, which was added later, some say, to both guide the narrative as well as cover for Arnold’s then unfamiliar accent. A prize.

Rush Limbaugh Comes Out...
As reported in SF Chronicle, (which was first reported in the National Enquirer and here on Monday) conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh "came out" to the national media today to announce, "I am addicted."
Comedians are clamouring to recycle fat jokes and pain killer jokes formerly written about Elvis.

Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh announced during his radio show Friday that he is addicted to painkillers and is checking into a rehab center to "break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me."
"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life," Limbaugh said during a stunning admission aired nationwide. "So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication."
"Immediately following this broadcast, I am checking myself into a treatment center for the next 30 days to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me," he added.
Attempts to reach Limbaugh by phone, e-mail, fax and at his Florida home were unsuccessful Friday.
Limbaugh gave up his job as an ESPN sports analyst Oct. 1, three days after saying on the sports network's "Sunday NFL Countdown" that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.
The reports of possible drug abuse surfaced at about the same time, first in the National Enquirer. The tabloid had interviewed Wilma Cline, who said she became Limbaugh's drug connection after working as his maid. She said Limbaugh had abused OxyContin and other painkillers.
Law enforcement sources who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed to The Associated Press that Limbaugh was being investigated by the Palm Beach County, Fla., state attorney's office.
"At the present time, the authorities are conducting an investigation, and I have been asked to limit my public comments until this investigation is complete," Limbaugh said.
Mike Edmondson, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County state attorney's office, said Friday his office could neither confirm nor deny that an investigation was under way. Limbaugh's attorney, Roy Black, did not return a message seeking comment.
Limbaugh said he started taking painkillers "some years ago" after a doctor prescribed them following a spinal surgery. His back pain stemming from the surgery persisted, so Limbaugh said he started taking pills and became hooked.
"Over the past several years I have tried to break my dependence on pain pills and, in fact, twice checked myself into medical facilities in an attempt to do so. I have recently agreed with my physician about the next steps."
A spokesman for Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates the politically focused "Rush Limbaugh Show" to more than 650 markets, declined to elaborate on Limbaugh's previous treatment.
Limbaugh reported two years ago that he had lost most of his hearing because of an autoimmune inner-ear disease. He had surgery to have an electronic device placed in his skull to restore his hearing.
Research has found that abuse of opiate-based painkillers like those Limbaugh is accused of taking can lead to profound hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear, said Dr. Gail Ishiyama, an assistant professor at the UCLA department of neurology. She could not confirm that was Limbaugh's case without access to his medical history.
Steve Plamann, executive editor of The National Enquirer, said he was gratified by Limbaugh's admission and his plans to seek help.
"We didn't do our stories gleefully. We just reported the facts," Plamann said.
However, Limbaugh said that reports about his addiction have inaccuracies and distortions which he will clarify when he is able to speak about them.
Premiere spokesman Michael Sitrick said Limbaugh is expected to return to his program after completing treatment. Several guest hosts were scheduled until then.

While casting for the newest COLT movie, it was imperative to have a blend of past, present, and future COLT Men. With that in mind, John Rutherford and his team quietly did a search for months looking for the right blend of experienced and new models. "Once the casting process was finished, I knew that we were on to something very, very special," Rutherford states. "This is a new beginning for COLT. Talk-radio titan Rush Limbaugh is being investigated for allegedly buying thousands of addictive painkillers from a black-market drug ring.
The moralizing motormouth was turned in by his former housekeeper - who says she was Limbaugh's pill supplier for four years.
Wilma Cline, 42, says Limbaugh was hooked on the potent prescription drugs OxyContin, Lorcet and hydrocodone - and went through detox twice.
"There were times when I worried," Cline told the National Enquirer, which broke the story in an edition being published today. "All these pills are enough to kill an elephant - never mind a man."
Cline could not be reached for further comment yesterday, but her lawyer, Ed Shohat of Miami, said his client "stands behind the story."
The Daily News independently confirmed that Limbaugh is under investigation.
His lawyers, Jerry Fox and Dan Zachary, refused to comment on the accusations and said any "medical information" about him was private and not newsworthy.
They said Limbaugh - who has a top-rated syndicated radio show but resigned early today from a weekly ESPN football segment amid criticism of racial comments about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb - was traveling and had no comment.
The Palm Beach County state attorney's office, which is running the probe, said it could not confirm or deny the allegations.
Scoring in parking lot
Cline told the Enquirer she went to prosecutors with information about Limbaugh and others after four years of drug deals that included clandestine handoffs in a Denny's parking lot.
She said she wore a wire during her last two deliveries to the conservative commentator and gave the tapes to authorities.
She also gave the Enquirer a ledger documenting how many pills she claimed to have bought for him - 4,350 in one 47-day period - and E-mails she claimed Limbaugh sent her.
In one missive, Limbaugh pushed Cline to get more "little blues" - code for OxyContin, the powerful narcotic nicknamed hillbilly heroin, she said.
"You know how this stuff works ... the more you get used to, the more it takes," the May 2002 E-mail reads. "But I will try and cut down to help out."
The account Cline gave the Enquirer is that she became Limbaugh's drug connection in 1998, nine months after taking a housekeeping job at his Palm Beach mansion.
It started after her husband, David, hurt himself in a fall, and Limbaugh asked how he was.
"He asked me casually, 'Is he getting any pain medication?' I said, 'Yes - he's had surgery, and the doctor gave him hydro-codone 750,'" Cline said. "To my astonishment, he said, 'Can you spare a couple of them?'"
Husband's pills
Cline said she gave Limbaugh 10 pills the next day and agreed to give him 30 of her husband's pills each month. When the doctor stopped renewing the prescription in early 1999, Limbaugh allegedly went ballistic.
"His tone was nasty and bullying. He said, 'I don't care how or what you do, but you'd better - better! - get me some more,'" Cline said.
The housekeeper said she found a new supplier and arranged to hide Limbaugh's stashes under his mattress so his wife, Marta, wouldn't find them.
After several months, Limbaugh told her he was going to New York for detox and didn't need any more pills, Cline said.
But a month later, he said his left ear was hurting and asked her for hydrocodone, followed by an order for OxyContin.
Limbaugh, 52, suffered from autoimmune ear disease, a condition that left him deaf and had to be corrected with cochlear implant surgery two years ago.
Cline said she continued to make deliveries to Limbaugh even after she quit as his housekeeper in July 2001 - but he became increasingly paranoid, even patting her down for recording devices, she said.
In June 2002, Limbaugh told her he was going to New York for detox a second time.
After he returned, "I went to talk to him, and he cried a little bit," she said. "He told me that if it ever got out, he would be ruined."
She claimed that a lawyer for Limbaugh gave her a payoff - $80,000 he owed her, plus another $120,000 - and asked her to destroy the computer that contained the E-mail records.
Soon after, Cline and her husband retained Shohat and contacted prosecutors.
Feeling no pain
The drugs Rush Limbaugh is accused of abusing are legal only with a doctor's prescription. All are habit-forming.
Hydrocodone
Anti-cough agent and painkiller similar to morphine. Side effects include anxiety, poor mental performance, emotional dependence, drowsiness, mood changes, difficulty breathing and itchiness.
Lorcet
Brand name for the combination of Tylenol and hydrocodone, prescribed for moderate to severe pain. Side effects include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dizziness, tiredness, muscle twitches, sweating and itching.
OxyContin
Potent time-release medication for relief of moderate to severe pain, known as hillbilly heroin because of black-market popularity in some rural areas. Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, sweating, muscle twitches and decreased sex drive. A large dose can be fatal.
Rush tells why he quit
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh said Thursday he resigned as an ESPN sports analyst to protect advertisers and network employees from the uproar over critical comments he made about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
Limbaugh stepped down from the sports network’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” late Wednesday, three days after saying on the show that McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.
“The great people at ESPN did not want to deal with this kind of reaction,” Limbaugh told the National Association of Broadcasters at its convention in Philadelphia on Thursday. “The path of least resistance became for me to resign.”
Limbaugh did not directly address media reports that began surfacing Wednesday that said the talk show host was under investigation in Florida for allegedly illegally obtaining and abusing prescription painkillers.
Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates the politically focused “Rush Limbaugh Show,” issued a statement from Limbaugh earlier Thursday saying: “I am unaware of any investigation by any authority involving me. No government representative has contacted me directly or indirectly. If my assistance is required, I will, of course, cooperate fully.”
Talking about his comments about McNabb on ESPN, Limbaugh said Thursday that he had thought about the issue the night before making the comments. He also said he was used to scrutiny after 15 years in radio and expects to get attention.
“I figured if I’m going to do this (the ESPN show) I should be who I am,” he said.
Limbaugh has denied that his comments were racially motivated.
“I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,” Limbaugh said on Sunday’s show. “There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.”
